Numbness ... Better than Pain?

Hello, I'm a first time poster in this board, but have been around for a few months as I have quite a few health issues.

I have a large numb patch on my back between my shoulder blades (about 8-10 inches wide). I've had what was described as "diminished sensation" there before where I could still feel something, but this morning raking my nails down that section of my back I felt nothing at all (I had felt a stinging sensation). An MRI last May showed all my discs were bulging one way or the other, and most with broken off osteophyte material, some bulging in towards my spine. My rheumatologist said that one in my thoracic spine in particular, I think T9/10, may need surgery to release it because my lungs could collapse.

Does anyone think this total numbness could be pointing to this disc needing surgical intervention? I see my rheumy next Friday but this is really worrisome and I'd appreciate if anyone has any advice. Thanks very much.

Re: Numbness ... Better than Pain?

I'm wondering why your Rheumy hasn't referred you to a Spine surgeon or a spine clinic for an evaluation?

Re: Numbness ... Better than Pain?

Thanks for your response Ann. Maybe with this new symptom he will; the MRI report from last May said that it had only indented the thecal sac slightly. The MRI probably should be repeated on my thoracic spine. I always have pain there but his treatments have always helped; lately the pain is getting worse in more than that one area, so he's just started me on Lyrica and this past week we found out I may have osteoporosis; a BMD scan was done on Thursday as well as a total body bone scan. I'm waiting for an MRI date for my low back and hips; I'm going to ask him to get a whole spine MRI when I see him on Friday, if only to compare the results to the last one. If I have OP, then I think maybe that the vertebral degeneration from my OA may be progressing faster.

Does this make sense? Or am I being paranoid?

Thanks.
