Looking for Advice

In Jan of this year, I had a multi level laminectomy with a 6 level fusion from C2-T1. I was wondering if anyone out there has gone thru the same thing. I am having much difficulty with my recovery as I have been on at least 18 diffferent kinds of medications. I currently am seeing a pain mgt specialists to assists me, however it is with very little relief. I currently now on 4 medications for pain relief, sleep aid, and muscle spasms. I still am not sleeping as I am up 6-7 times a night with pain and stiffness throughout my neck and have lower extremity weakness. I am in pt 3x a week also with little or no relief. I am completey frustrated at this point and am looking for what I can expect in the future. I know everyone heals differently, but would like to see what someone else went through. I am in my mid 40's but now feel much older. I would appreciate any input. Thanks

Re: Looking for Advice

I was fused from C3 to T1 3 1/2 years ago and I can tell you that recovery is very slow. I was also done in January(2007) and by June I was still in major pain and struggling. Things really turned around for me in September when the pain level went down and a lot of movement I had lost came back(I had partial paralysis on my left side post-op).

I continued doing PT on and off for 18 months. As things came back or I got strength back, I did a little more PT. Just last summer at 2 1/2 years post-op I did some specialized PT just to help my sense pf balance. Long fusions of the neck can cause you to lose a lot of your balance as you can no longer make the minute movements of your head that are required for balance. So I did a lot of work in that area to minimize falling.

This kind of fusion takes a good 2 years to recover from(that was from my neurosurgeon) and I'd say 3 is more accurate. Your body has to learn to live with it and that takes time.

You should start to feel better but that also depends on why you had it and how much damage was done prior to the fusion. I still take muscle spasm drugs at night time....I just feel better doing it. I take the lowest dose of Soma they have(250mgs) and I sleep better and function better the next day. I take only ibuprofen or Tylenol for pain and that is not often.

I know it's painful and a long haul to recover but in my case, I was looking at paralysis so I'm glad I did it. I don't mind the pain and other problems that come with such a long fusion. Met a guy with a 10 vertebrae fusion who felt the same way....it beats the alternative.

Keep working and let me know. I'm here and I've been where you are. It does get better.

gentle hugs................Jenny
