Two months since ACDF - advice about drugs

I had a C6/7 just over two months ago to sort out spinal compression. Surgeon was satisfied that this has been resolved but the main reason for going in the first place was neuro pain in both arms. The pains are still - on many days worse - I wake up several times a night with a numb hand (either side). I have been on Gabapentin which keeps the pain at bay but makes me dopey if I take high doses and does nothing to stop the numbness at night. My GP recently changed my medication to amitriptyline and I feel like a zombie - sure I only wake up briefly at night and with pins and needles rather than full numbness. I still have the pains in the arms. So I am not sure this is working and don't really understand it as it is mostly used for depresssion. Thing is I am going back to work in just over a week and certainly cannot operate feeling like this. I manage a large team of staff and at the present time could not manage anything - can't wake up before 10 am. Any advice?

Re: Two months since ACDF - advice about drugs

Perhaps asking for a referral to a Pain Management specialist. They are much more capable of working with ongoing pain issues than a primary care doctor is. Also, when I had my ACDF I did have a nerve that was still very irritated. I had an epidural steroid injection post op which helped the nerve calm down a bit.

Re: Two months since ACDF - advice about drugs

Drugs such as that many times help nerve pain, you could ask to try Tegretol-XR, that should not make you feel drugged or tried.

Also taking some thing like cellbrex with it should also help, if it really is nerve pain a small dos of the fentanyl patch should help, at this point though I'm sure they are trying to see what happens.

Kind of what I told my dad who had a operation a few months ago, he said the pain meds didn't help all that much, and I pointed out he want to know if some thing is going wrong.

So taking away all the pain is not the smartest thing to do, just get it to where you can live with it, 2 months is not very long for healing, you need to get your self up and doing things.

You can't just worry about it all and thinks it's going to go away, start doing stuff just don't over do it that will help you more then anything, yes it will be hard at first but it should keep getting easier.

Re: Two months since ACDF - advice about drugs

ces59 lives in England. Why don't they give you Oxycontin for your pain. Nothing works better for Chronic/severe pain. It's narcotic yes but nothing else works like that.
Gabapentin/neurontin works a bit for nerve pain but Oxycontin takes most/all the pain away.

amitryptline(spelling)did almost nothing for the pain I have.

There is also Clonazapam or Valium. You can try that if your doctor over there in England refuse to prescribe you Narcotic and that's too bad.

Take Care.
