Make the Pain stop...PLEASE

I am about to loose my mind. I have degeneration of discs 2-5. Slight bulging, but not worth operating yet. My biggest problem is cervical muscle spasms. Even the slightest cough, bending over, turning my head just so, or even laughing sometimes can get it going. It is THE WORST pain by far that I have ever had. I feel as tho someone is ramming my head into a cement wall. MY GP has done all he can for me and has referred me to a neuro-surgeon. Can't get into see her until the end of June. Meanwhile, Life sucks! I feel as tho I could just...well, nevermind. Anyone else ever had this problem? It is seriously becoming dibilitating. I just want the pain to stop.

Re: Make the Pain stop...PLEASE

I injured my back severely in January. The pain had not gone away by May. I was tired of taking pain killers. I was exercising and stretching and doing back strengthening exercises and I could tell it was all good to do but it wasn't helping my pain. I had been reading that back pain is the #1 reason people turn to acupuncture, and I thought, "Why not?" So I tried it. I felt a difference nearly immediately after the first session, even though I was skeptical, so I'm sure it wasn't a placebo effect. After my second session I stayed pain free for a week. Seriously. I strained my back after my third session because I had felt so good i overdid it one weekend working and exercising, and I still hurt some, but I'm off pain meds and I have another acupuncture appointment scheduled this Friday.

If you're open to complimentary medicine, I hope you'll consider something like this. Acupuncture, yoga, massage are all noted to help with back pain.

Re: Make the Pain stop...PLEASE

HI Wannabewell...I know the problem well. I had them before my 2 neck surgeries and I have them again but don't know yet what is wrong. Have you used and muscle relaxants like Valium or Soma or Flexiril or Zanaflex or Skelaxin(the last 2 are mild)? I can't get through the day right now without my Soma. Neither of my shoulders can come forward without spasms.

Having been through this a couple of times before, I turned right away to the drugs I knew worked...for me that is Soma or Valium. and I take it regularly and don't stop it if I have a good day. It's all about keeping it under control.

And I have some stretches I use to try to relieve them but right now even those don't work. So until I see my neurosurgeon next week, I use the drugs.

When I broke my neck 3 years ago the spasms were never ending but I found that a pain killer and anti-spasm drug did pretty well. Ask your doc until you see the neurosurgeon. Again, the trick was to take them regularly and not let them get out of my system to avoid breakthrough pain and spasms.

Once you know what is wrong and have a treatment plan, then things like acupuncture and PT and other modalities will be good to explore. I've had acupuncture as well and it worked well on my upper torso but not the lower.

Have you had an MRI and do you know what is wrong yet?

Jenny

Hi there, sorry to hear you are hurting. I would recommend you make an appointment with a Neurologist who specializes in Neuromuscular disorders, they can sometimes get to the root of the spasm etc. and are specialists in how to treat this. Also, in terms of medications - does not sound like you are taking muscle relaxants at all. I would recommend you try (via prescription) carisoprodol 350 3X day (up to 3X day); the generic name is "Soma". This (or other centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxants) can be a life-saver esp if the discs are pressing on or deforming your spinal cord. Robaxin also is similar and can be very effective (but note some people experience some depression on Robaxin, less so with carisoprodol/Soma).

Best of luck - I would say try a prescription muscle relaxant (via your physician) and also you can ICE the region where the disk bulges are for 20 min at a time...this can actually calm down the spasms quite a bit, too. Feel better!!! Try lying down while icing and trying to relax/rest.

Take care,

"schmoe"
