Help!!! Constant Neck and Back Pain - Need Answers!

This is my first time posting. I feel Ive exhausted all other options and am in desperate need to find someone with my symptoms who has found relief or become pain free.

I was in a MVA June 2008. Since then I have constant pain and have been to numerous doctors and specialist and taken so many different medications I have to keep a list so I don't mistakenly take one that I have before or one thatís caused a neg reaction. Still I have problems dealing with this as my pain management treatment plan does NOT effectively manage my pain. I have severe pain every minute of every day which begins at the base of my skull, down my spine to my buttocks with daily headaches that vary in severity. The headaches begin with muscle tightness in my neck which intensifies the pain at the base of my skull and travels over my head causing a severe headache that even goes behind my eyeballs! When this happens I seek quite and darkness to prevent the pain from escalating. My head constantly feels like it is being squeezed or filled with pressure and this intensifies when the severe headaches are present. I have memory loss and trouble concentrating. i also have frequent episodes of numbness, vertigo, confusion and the inability to move my left hand. I've had seizures and during the last week they have been everyday, multiple times a day and often one right after the other. I did not have any problems, especially of this kind, before the accident.

The only formal dx i have been given is occipital neuralgia, TMJ, anxiety, depression & PTSD. An EMG has determined my neck/shoulder muscles are CONSTANTLY contracted. 2 MRIs (each MRI found different issues) identified C3-4 moderate right & left posterlateral herniation; Unconvertebral Joint Hypertrophy C3-4; L3-4 & L4-5 disc buldge L5-S1 herniation all with advanced facet and/or ligamentum flavum hypertrohpy; Thoracic deroscliosis & straight cervical lordosis, etc. The doctors told me I had a closed head injury and spinal cord contusion at the time of the injury.

I've taken LOTS of different medication, nerve blocks, facet injections, and also had my cervical nerves burned (though, I did not know the latter was what was going to happen until AFTER the procedure). My lower back has yet to be treated as my neck is the most painful and my dr wanted to start with what was causing the most problems. Ive been in physical therapy for 2 years and received chiropractic treatment for 9 months. I also used a TENS unit for 3 months but it caused more pain rather then lessening it.

It's been 2 years and I havent found relief! Has anyone experienced anything like this? What was the diagnosis? Did any treatment help or eliminate the pain/problem?

I feel like I'm going crazy! I have 4 and 5 yr old children and I'm often unable to care for them at times. Please help, this is taking over my life!

Re: Help!!! Constant Neck and Back Pain - Need Answers!

HI BetterSomeday. I'm sorry you're having so many problems. Seems your entire spine and brain took a beating in that MVA. If you read the posts by MJml, you'll see that she too is battling back from an MVA in February.

One of the problems when you have so many different problems is all the different opinions you get from specialists. Been there. But one of the things I've done to kind of solve this problem is to find a doc who can oversee the treatment of all of the injuries and in your case, it might be a rheumatologist. Have you seen one? They don't treat brain problems but they do treat spine problems. They are the non-surgical side of orthopedics and often can come up with combinations of anti-inflammatories and pain meds that are better than any pain management doc. Often, injuries that have healed can still cause pain due to inflammation that hasn't gone away. And then when you put those muscle spasms on top of it....yikes they hurt.

Most people think of rheumatologist as just arthritis docs but it's more appropriate to think of them as bone, muscle and joint docs. They don't operate but they do treat. And you have a lot of bone muscle and joint problems.

I see one and he keeps me sane with all the other problems I have. If you haven't, try it. I saw several before I found one so quiet and gentle that seeing him is just soothing in and of itself. He has me on a good combination of muscle relaxers and anti-inflammatories and pain meds when needed. Worth his weight in gold.

What do you have to lose, right?

Again, I'm sorry you hurt so much.

hugs.............Jenny

Thank you so very much for your response. Odd you should mention it but in the past 2 weeks I've been looking into what other types of doctors may be more appropriate to help me given my situation. I found information on rheumatologists and also thought that should be my next step but wasn't sure if I was going in the right direction. Quite honestly I can't imagine what else I could lose. Thanks for giving me the push I needed to make the call! And the hugs! You really need them during times like this

I noticed that you chose this topic to post in. To what extent have you had head/cranial evaluation? Have you read your post-accident medical reports? What did the neurological exam reveal then? Has the focus always been on the spine?
