Titanium Poisoning

My wife had been diagnosed as having titanium poisoning/hypersensitity in Jan 2011. In 2001, she had neck surgery which required her to have a titanium plate/screws inserted into her neck. All of the Drs we have seen have said they have heard of this but do not have any experience. We have been told that more than likely she will need the hardware removed.

Has anyone have any experience with this sort of problem?

Re: Titanium Poisoning

You can develop a hypersensitivity(basically an allergy) to anything at any time. This happens way too frequently with knee implants and all they can do is give you allergy meds until surgery can be done to remove the hardware as in your wife's case, or in the case of knees where something has to be put in, change to a different metal. I have so many allergies that my orthopedist extensively tested me for metal allergies prior to putting in my knees. So far so good with my titanium neck as there was no time for testing before that got put in. Knees are primarily nickel and cobalt.

There are other surgical metals and they do have surgical stainless steel for necks but if she is fused, she should be okay. (have that in my shoulder)

They used to remove hardware all the time to make the fusions stronger but with the strength and lack of allergic responses to titanium, they usually leave everything in now. As long as the bone has fused everything together, she should be fine.

Re: Titanium Poisoning

What are the symptoms your wife has been having? Have you had the implant removed?

Re: Titanium Poisoning

I had the same cervical surgery C3-C7. Since my surgery I have developed many illnesses. I believe my body is being poisoned by titanium plates and screws. Also 2 levels did not fuse. I am in constant severe pain and am taking narcotic med's and several other med's but the pain never stops it just keeps attacking different parts of my body. I am at the end of my rope I need answers. What are the symptoms of titanium poisoning and how is it diagnosed? I have been to several doctors and they all say they have never heard of titanium poisoning. Can someone please help me?

Re: Titanium Poisoning

Some spine surgeons will deny that the hardware can cause an allergic reaction, but I think we now know that is not the case. I think the best way to be diagnosed is to go to an allergist and request to be tested for allergies to metals. (don't just get tested for "titanium") If you want to be really technical about it, you can request a plate or rod or whatever that is the same as what was implanted in your body and have it tested.

The hardware is not pure titanium -- it is made with a small percentage of nickel. The amount is very small, but some people are allergic to it and it can result in a variety of weird symptoms.

You can look online to read up on titanium allergies....

My wife is also in constant pain. Some days she is in so much pain I have to give her morphine shots. She has developed sever leg and arm twitches. She is constantly tired and weak. They did remove the titanium plates and screws last year as suggested by the CDC. We rechecked the titanium levels six months afterwards and that was not any changes. She seems to have autoimmune type symptoms but none of the Doctors diagnose this. We are going to Shands at Gainsville Fl in July 13 to hopefully get some answers. Have you had any luck?

Hello henderson?, well, my neck hurts me 24/7. It is horrible. Your wife is suffering big time. It's not good to have constant pain.

Anyway, was your wife in a car accident? What happened to her, was it a whiplash?

I am so sorry your wife has to deal with constant chronic neck pain? (that is what I understood here). THat is horrible.

Re: Titanium Poisoning

hello mess...you are too young to have a neck surgery. Why did you need to do a neck surgery anyway? another car accident victim? (whiplash).
