Pins and needles in right arm

I suffered an unconscious fall two & a half years ago resulting in the rupture of the disc between C4/C5 vertebrae which caused compression of the spinal cord. My right arm & leg were paralysed until I had surgery to remove the ruptured disc & fuse the 2 vertebrae about 24 hours later. My rehab has gone exceptionally well & I don't have any significant lasting spinal cord damage except parasthesia (severe pins & needles) in my right arm from the tips of my fingers to my elbow. Neurosurgeons / neurologists have said that the parasthesia may ease with the passage of time, but nothing has changed / improved so far. I have been prescribed Tegretol & Gabapentin, (anticonvulsants) to try & reduce the pain associated with the parasthesia, but both drugs have had no effect.
I was wondering if anyone else has heard of a similar condition & what other options there may be for treatment.

Re: Pins and needles in right arm

I also suffered paralysis after breaking my neck 5 years ago but I was mainly left side with some right sided problems as well. I have gotten about 95% of movement back but have major nerve loss in my left arm. I had the pins and needles stuff finally go away at 3 years post-op. It has left me with an arm with extremely lose tendons that allow my joints to dislocate very easily as well as a subtle loss of sensation.

I tried the drug Cymbalta and found it worked far better than Gabapentin. It is approved for both anxiety, depression and peripheral neuropathy and I found it worked best for the neuropathy.

I also found that taking a daily dose of Vit. B Complex also helped me heal. Essential vitamins for nerves.

As long as that nerve is trying to heal, it will do this. When it finally gives up, the pain stops. So it is a toss up.....you want the pain to stop yet you know when it does, it may be because the nerve is not going to fully recover. Lets both hope that it slowly goes away because the nerves heal.
