Titanium Mesh Disc Implant??

Does anyone on the boards know anything about titanium disc implants, or has anyone had them implanted? I have looked on the Net but cannot find anything about them except for medical journal articles that you have to pay for to gain access to the entire document.

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Titanium Mesh Disc Implant??

If you have a disk that has ruptured and is casing problems and needs to be removed, the docs have to replace it with something else to maintain the height of the neck and keep the vertebrae working right. So they have cages of different kinds of material that fit in that disk space. They usually fill them with bone, either your own or cadaver bone that is treated with a protein to make it grow. When it grows and fills up the cage, you then have 2 vertebra the normal height and the bones all grow together so you have a fusion.

Some cages are titanium mesh cages others are solid titanium....many different kinds and it's what your doc prefers to work with that determines what kind of cage you get.

Sounds like you are headed for surgery?

Re: Titanium Mesh Disc Implant??

Thank you, Jenny. I wondered if it was a cage. He said that I would be able to drive within a week, and I knew that I could not do that if I didn't have a cage of some type, and he never said anything about wearing a collar.

Yes, my surgery date is July 2nd. I wish it were today or tomorrow. The waiting and the pain are killing me.

Re: Titanium Mesh Disc Implant??

They didn't use a cage when they fused my L4-5 discs. It was a horrible experience.

Re: Titanium Mesh Disc Implant??

I had 3 level on May 15th (C3/4, C5/6/7). he used mesh cages (not sure if titanium) filled with marrow from my hip, and titanium plates. I can't believe how good my ROM is, and ALL my pre-op pain is gone. I hardly used a brace/collar, except in the car. I even went in to work for a little while today.
