Severe Neck Pain and need a help to understand the recent MRI findings!

I had a severe neck since my car accident back in 1992 and recently had a MRI done. The results are followed;
At C3-4, there is 2-3 mm disc protrusion predominantly laterally. There is no central canal stenosis or cord effacement. There is mild left and moderate right neural foramen encroachment secondary to intraforaminal disc and osteophyte.

At C4-5, there is a 2 mm central disc protrusion without central canal stenosis or cord effacement. There is minimal neural foramen encroachment on the right.

At C5-6, there is a 2-3 mm broad disc osteophyte complex which contacts but does not efface the cord. AP diameter of the canal at this level is 10 mm which is lower limits of normal. The neural foramina are patent.

At C6-7, there is no significant disc herniation, central canal stenosis or cord effacement. There is minimal right neural foramen encroachment secondary to uncovertebral hypertrophy.

Can anyone please explain me what these finding are meant? Thanks.

Re: Severe Neck Pain and need a help to understand the recent MRI findings!

Hello. I commiserate with you. I, too, sufffer from severe neck pain.
so, you had a whiplash. This is something once you have it it never goes away.
7 years with me....Sometimes the pain is from soft tissue damage---tendons, ligaments and muscles get damaged.

Other than that, I don't understand your mri. sorry. I have 2 bulging disks and it hurts like hell.
Can you function with this neck pain?

Re: Severe Neck Pain and need a help to understand the recent MRI findings!

Your MRI (as summarized by the radiologist) looks pretty benign. The only thing that stands out as possibly being a problem is the MODERATE foraminal encroachment at C3-4. The next step up from Moderate is Severe, so you may have borderline condition there. The radiologist doesn't seem to think so, but it's a matter of interpretation.

Your neck pain may be muscular in nature. While your MRI is fairly benign now, it must have been much more so back in 1992, so if you have had pain that long it points to muscles rather than to your spine. I'm afraid I don't know anything about whiplash or other muscular problems, though....
