Deana, good to hear from you, though I'm sorry you feel so punky. Don't feel bad if you need more pain meds than most of us. After all, most of us did donor bone. There is no way, given a choice, that having two surgeries for the price of one sounds like a bargain!
Other than the hip, I hope you feel decent enough. It will get better, promise!
I know that with smokers they do the autograft more, because of rejection issues. Don't know any reason a nonsmoker would need to undergo that pain unless it is a numerous level fusion.
Speaking of painkillers, my doc sent me home with morphine patches, but I quit those after one week when I was almost ready to hit the hospital due to a dang-near impacted bowel. Steer clear of those. The package insert even said they shouldn't be given post-surgery. Now I know why...stupid surgeon!
Other than that it was Lortab or Vicodin in 7.5 mg tablets 3 times a day for a couple of weeks, then I cut down from there.
