Hey Joanne,
I'm so glad you had such a good time with your mother and friend. Road trips are only as good as the company you keep along the way. Sounds like you've got a keeper of a friend. I like the way you surprised your mom.
We used to do stuff like that to my mom when we'd make the trip to visit her. Once, we had my nephew (then about 10) sit on her doorstep at 12 midnight, crying that he was lost. My sister and I were hiding in the bushes, and my nephew had his back to her with his face in his hands, so mom hadn't a clue. Sometimes I think we're all a little "off" in my family. It doesn't take much to entertain us!
I'm sorry about Cody Dog. That's a unique kind of grief, I know. I believe that he's up there in heaven...and yes, dogs DO go to heaven!....bugging Jesus to play with him....right alongside of my Shelby Khan. Again, my sympathies.
Hope you're recouping from the travel well. Riding is hard on these ol' backs. Get some rest.

Teri
