Hey Kathleen!
Here's something that's finally up my alley.... er, up my nose! Sorry, I could not resist that! but I did sleep at a Holida... no, I really didn't, sleep that is. Didn't sleep well at all last night; it must have been the espresso I had after dinner.
I had an awake fiber-optic nasal intubation for my abdominal surgery in February, because my NS didn't want to risk severe and irreversible cord damage. And because I was not a candidate for an epidural or other similar option, I had to have "af-oni". I don't really remember too much, but I do have a vague recollection of my actually fighting them off when they tried to cram that tube down my nose, and it hurt. Then I was "out", and it was all ok after that, except for the huge cornflake-sized scabs (yeah, YOU know what else they could be called!

) that came out of my nose for about a week after that. Except for the fact that the next week I was back in the hopsital with ileus and had to have a nasogastric tube down my other nostril for another 5 days, I guess I could have lived with it.... But I'm just glad that my NS said he would not use it on me again. Keep in mind that this was my fourth anaesthesia since 1/2/03! I am just a tad weary of all the surgery this year!
Really, Kathleen, if this is what he suggests, do it. I'm would not be looking forward to having it again... at least for a few months, but it's NOT SO AWFUL that you can't do it at least once. And maybe other departments have better or different techniques; it's possible I just had it on a bad day, or with a bad anesthetist...
Welcome to the board! We've got all sorts of answers for you, and we usually like to gab a bit, too.
