Post Not taking no for an answer

Even though this topic is far from the seriousness of some of the dilemas faced on this board. I think this is a good example of how you have to fight for what you need in medical care. My youngest, who is 20... (still my baby) starting feeling awful on Monday, at which time she went to see the family doctor. Who by the way we adore and respect. He said it may be viral but gave her a prescription for antibotics in case she got worse. Throat was pretty swollen and sore. Well she felt better Tuesday and Wednesday, then Thursday night she was really yucky again and filled the antibotic. Today she was a mess so I called the office and explained how her throat hurt and so did her neck and the symptoms were really awful, she was tearful and at 20, that just doesn't happen anymore.
They told me to give it 48 to 72 hours... the drugs need to work. By noon I called again, again they said wait (this time talked to a nurse). By 2:30 I just insisted she come in because her throat was swelling outside (glands). So in we went, and low and behold Doctor thinks it's mono and said she needs to come back Monday for blood work. Today she may give a false negative.
Needless to say, you have to fight for what you KNOW ... and what would have happened if she went the weekend. She has pain pills for the throat, spray, decongestive, advil and a z-pac.
I tell you, I was frustrated. Then I thought of Mel... geeze, this is insane. Well, had to vent... and I thank you if you bothered to read all this rambling
Debbie

Debbie
Sorry to hear about your daughter but its good that you were persistant. I know what you mean about being your baby my son hates when I say that but no matter what age they will always be our babies.
Hope your daughter has a reastful weekend and gets results with meds.Tell her to rest and let mom take care of her.
Prayers and thoughts are with you and family. Let us know how she is doing
You can vent anytime you feel the need as it makes us feel better knowing someone will listen and cares

Cool

Debbie~

That is all too true...we have to be our own best advocates when it comes to medical care. And assertiveness doesn't come naturally to some. I struggle with that all the time. I mean, I can be assertive, but it usually takes being angry, and I don't like to communicate that way. It always makes me feel like crap. But, unfortunately, sometimes that's what it takes.

Good for you for pushing to get the proper treatment for your daughter. That "gut feeling" when something's amiss, doesn't require a degree in medicine to recognize. And a mother's instinct is one of the most powerful forces on earth. And, by watching you in action, your daughter is now better equipped to advocate for her own medical care in the future.

I hope your daughter starts feeling better soon. They never stop needing their mamas, and they never stop being our babies.

God Bless,

~Teri

Hi Debbie,
You go, girl! We moms are like bears when it comes to our kids, no matter how old they are. Hope she is resting comfortably until Monday - you, too. Keep us posted.
