Post What happens if the fusion doesn't "take"???

I forgot my main question! What happens if fusions don't take?? Didn't ask that question before surgery! My doctor's nurse said they have had only 1 patient that it didn't take....any answers - I'm very positive about mine - just curious!

Amy -

I think they have to go in again if you don't fuse. Here are some fusing tips. I had a 2 level ACDF.

1. NO SMOKING
2. NO CAFFEINE
3. Increase your Vitamin D and calcium intake (just an educated guess, I have no evidence).
4. Ask if you can have a SpinalPak Fusion stimulator unit. I wore one for a while after my ACDF and I beleive it helped me.

Best wishes for successful surgery and recovery!!

BTW, AMY - I'm not so good at Geography, but is your city any where near Columbus, Indiana? There is a very good doctor in Columbus named ML Whitworth that I understand is very good with back problems. I was just curious if he was your doctor.

Lisa-

It broke my heart, too. I moved to Caffeine free C*ke products (LOL) and got an Iced tea maker to make decaff iced tea.

I'm not sure how sound this explantion is, but I've been told that caffeine sometimes breaks up calcium deposits in bones. I was curious why I got decaff coffee for breakfast and decaff tea at lunch/dinner. Also, why I couldn't have tea for breakfast cuz I don't drink coffee anyway. Smells great, taste doesn't make me want to dance.

Can you never drink caffeine again? Or is this just right after surgery? This is upseting me. I live on Coca-Cola! I know I need to drink more water, and I try to now with my neck problems, but coke is wonderful! I have heard one statement from a doctor that is contridicting to your statement. He told me to drink caffeine because it helps with the headaches. They told me to drink Coke after I had my discogram.

Amy,
Are you by any chance having your surgery at Methodist Hospital? I am in Shelbyville, had ACDF with corepctomy on 4-22-03. My surgeons name is Dr Terry Trammel he operates on race car drivers!!! Excellent Orthopedic Spine Surgeon!!!
Goodluck,

Thanks to all for your messages! I do have a bone growth stimulator which I have to wear 3 hours a day for the next 5 months. My Neurosurgeon is Dr. Kenneth Renkens - to whomever was asking - I had it at St. Vincents - Indy. He also does the Indy Car Drivers, he and his partner where the first to do an artifical disc in the US. I have a lot of faith ibn my Dr. His nurse said they have had only 1 patient who didn't fuse. I guess I'll keep a postive attitude and believe it will fuse - my God that's horrible if they have to go in again..!!!!!!!
