Is my NS trying to hide something? - Spinal Cord Disorders Message Board

Just got to thinking about my appt. with my NS last week. It was my first appt. since surgery, which was 9 weeks earlier. I explained that nothing had improved and that now I was having terrible pain at the base of my head which traveled up the back and all the way around to forehead. He explained that muscles, ligaments and nerves (including the occipital nerve) were displaced during surgery and that it could take a long time for all to heal. I asked him about PT, but he said that PT would be a ways down the road. He gave me a booklet with neck stretches I could try.

From reading all other posts, it seems that everyone is getting PT by this time. Why not me? Do you think that he may suspect something and is not saying so? My worst fear is that I may fall into the category of the 10% or so, that the surgery does not help!

My NS doesn't believe in PT ANYTIME if you've had a cervical surgery. I ask him because I was wondering the same thing, everybody on the board was getting PT and I thought I needed it too. He said PT will cause more problems than it will help so he doesn't order them. I'm not sure about the pain your having but I hope it is better soon. Someone on the board can offer help I'm sure.

hi!

my NS also did not recommend PT... just said to exercise my arms after surgery by imitating a chicken, and not to raise my arms above shoulder level...

that was it!

but he DID say that it was ok for me to get up from bed often and no matter if it was day or night, to walk around the house (not go up or down the stairs though) for a few minutes... i did this all the time in order to avoid DVT (Deeep Vein Thrombosis).

Thanks for your response. Maybe mine doesn't believe in the PT scene either. Hopefully, with time, things will get better. Unfortunately, time is all I have. I just want to get better!

Sandra, how soon after surgery did you begin exercises and for how long?
