Could Stress Cause THIS serious of Tummy Issues?

For the past two months I have had severe stomach issues.

I had a colonoscopy because my mom has crohns/colitis and I've always had weird digestive problems, so just to be safe, we went through with it but it found nothing too abnormal.

Then, my appetite died...

Every time I did eat (sometimes even when I didnt) I'd have horrible stomach pains in my upper abdomen, extreme bloating, followed by nausea and usually I'd spend some time wretching in the toilet (not usually PRODUCING much VOMIT but just dry heaving for ages)... Thinking I had an ulcer, the doc ordered a GASTROSCOPY which found nothing.

Continually feeling worse, I had an ultrasound to check for gallstones (found nothing)... Then, the doc put me on a liquid diet which eased the bloat somewhat, but gave me horrible diarhea, and a few times it was quite bloody. Bad cramping then followed. I had many urine/stool tests... all finding nothing once again, rounds and rounds of bloodwork.. NOTHING.

So... then, i had a small bowel follow through (drinking the barium)... which once again, has shown.. you guessed it... nothing.

My doctor had been willing to bet his left leg i had crohns due to family history and my symptoms but so far, we havent found that... I still have a CT scan coming up... but at this point im just frustrated and exhausted.

My GP has asked me about stress and if it could be responsible.... I guess I have been under some stress lately as my boyfriend has moved back to Australia (I live in canada) and I have been struggling to keep up with work/school enough so that I can get back to him by may.... But what Im wondering is, can stress cause SUCH SEVERE gastrointestinal problems?

If so, what can I do to relieve this? Nothing seems to work and I still have a real hard time eating.... I want my life back!! Have been out of school/work for over a month.

i dont know the answer but maybe try different foods, perhaps a food allergy is involved or was something damaged during the procedure?
read up on acid reflux and GERD on the net, often caused by stress

we've already had a look at GERD via an endoscopy and I dont show any signs... we also tested for lactose intolerance and celiacs disease (gluten allergies) and nada!! So frustrating

Re: Could Stress Cause THIS serious of Tummy Issues?

Hi I had a horrible stomach problem a few years ago. I could barely eat and I felt bloated 24-7 and I thought I would die after a few months of it persisting and doing medical tests to see what it was. It was nothing according to the tests. But what made me feel better and help me gain weight was taking vitamins, boost, and NOT over eating which caused me a lot of problems. It is important to stay regular too by eating a TON of greens- also I was lactose intolerant and allergic to certain fruits..so that was also a huge probelm. Good luck to you.

Trishac,

I had the SAME EXACT problems about 7 months ago. It was due to stress. The doc put me on some kind of gas medicine and he also told me to stop taking hydroxycut (which i was taking at the time) b/c he said I was on the verge of getting an ulcer! So if your pain doesn't lessen you might want to get that checked out.

Re: Could Stress Cause THIS serious of Tummy Issues?

Hmmmm...hasn't any doctor mentioned the possiblity of Irritable Bowel Syndrome?! That is usually the first thing specialists in the U.S. mention at appointments. It is VERY common, and stress can make it worse!

Also, I agree that you should make sure no food allergies are involved. I was seeing a natural medicine doctor for awhile, and they put me on a strict diet that excluded all of the most common foods that people are allergic to (dairy foods, foods containing gluten, etc). slowly, I added one of those foods back in each week to see if it had any effect on my symptoms. In the end, it turns out I had no allergies...I also had a colonoscopy & endoscopy, both were normal. Guess what the culprit was...STRESS! and a low-fiber diet which caused internal hemorrhoids didn't help things either.

But for a long time, I had alternating diarrhea/constipation...bloating...blood in stool, abnormally colored stools...but when my CRAZY stress levels dropped, all of these symptoms disappeared...hrrrmmm...yeah, stress was definitely involved!

One more suggestion...my natural medicine doctor gave me probiotics, and that seemed to help as well. Good luck!

Meg

Re: Could Stress Cause THIS serious of Tummy Issues?

Oh yes, if you're under severe stress, it can definitely manifest this way. I've completely lost my appetite with both rounds of severe anxiety I've endured. I suspect the dry heaves are your mind telling you that you can't eat, when in actuality you can. I had diarrhea for almost 6 weeks straight the last time and had all the test you have. As someone mentioned, mine was ultimately deemed IBS since no other medical cause could be found. The thing is, I don't really have an irritable bowel except when I'm under severe anxiety. Ruling anything medical out may give you the peace of mind you need to feel better. If not, I recommend counseling. In the meantime, know that it's probably NOT anything serious; it's just your mind ruling your body.

Re: Could Stress Cause THIS serious of Tummy Issues?

Hello: Just wanted to say that about 11 months ago I started having TREMENDOUS stomach pains (for about 6 months), thought that b/e I had a skin disorder (also possibly stress related) that it was caused by something like H-pylori (a gastrointestinal infection). So, I had blood tests but they came back negative. I had previously, the year before, experienced severe nausea and diarrhea without any explanation, also stomach cramps...The stomach aches (like a dishrag being wringed out up to my intestines is how i described it to the practitioner) ended about 3 or 4 months ago, with only one incident since then (that scared me to death)...Just saying I empathize, especially when it cannot be managed without diagnosis...next time, I dont know what I will do. I suffer from PTSD, and it just seems that there is not enough info. out there to put all of these important but seemingly 'extraneous' physical symptoms together. Good luck with a cure. PS: I should say I took homeopathic medicine, and maybe that is what cleared it up for me, (I can't recall which for what maybe calcera carbonica, and/or sulfur??) take care -Claire

Re: Could Stress Cause THIS serious of Tummy Issues?

This sounds just like what's been going on with me for the past 6 months. And you want to know what it was? Stress related. Stress can cause harm to your body. I was almost certain something was wrong in my abdomen and I was even having heart palpitations and chest pains. Nothing was showing up on the test results. I got a CT Scan done, Ultrasounds, plenty of blood taken, urine tests, Upper GI, Lower GI. My doctor's, at first, thought something really was wrong. But once they started realizing that nothing was showing up on any test.

There was something on my CT Scan that was suggestive Diverticulitis. At CT Scan isn't the best test for the colon, but if your colon is at all inflamed (which can happen if you stress out enough), it is suggestive Diverticulitis. That was quickly ruled out though.

Your mind is more powerful than you may think it is. I thought so, at least. Once my doctor finally asked if there was anything I was worried/upset about before the pain started, I knew he had to be right with thinking it's stress related.

Stress can cause pain all over your body and make you believe that something's really there and make you stress even more because there are no answers as to what's wrong! It's crazy, but true. So try and think back to when the pain started and if anything were going on then.

Good luck and sorry for the ranting...

Certainly it could. That is how most ulcers start.
