Re: what causes shortness of breath with anxiety

I'v gone through panic attacks and realize its all mental.
I'v listened to alot of stress cds online that helped me.
The key part is, that panic passes quickly when you stop your anxious thoughts. Empty your mind of anxious thoughts... You can wait it out... breathe deeply and evenly... and soon.. very soon... it is all over...
Say this in your head. Stop the thoughts of danger.... Inside your mind you will shout... STOP to the anxious thoughts. Think of a Stop sign in your mind and just Stop the thoughts of danger. I'v realized what was hurting me was constantly dwelling on the negative. Remember you control your thoughts.
You write the story. Be in control of your thoughts. Dont let the negative control you.
Imagine your anxiety as a picture hanging in a museum... Imagine the image of your anxiety... on the wall of the museum... You are moving past the picture... floating past the picture... now... you are almost past the picture... and now.... it disappears from your sight. Your anxiety passes like the picture out of sight...

Re: what causes shortness of breath with anxiety

Whereas I agree with what Stoler said and liked his analogy mine was unfortunately under different circumstances. I have had to go to a behaviorial psychologist (the best in my city) who had to get a psychiatrist involved because I had 24/7 shortness of breath and chest tightness. After being to more specialists than you could come up with they all asked me to seek mental help.

I am not crazy. I know those are always the first words of a crazy person but I am a high level manager for a large company with a husband and child. I work 55hrs a week, do the housework, play with my child and conduct life normally except for the fact I couldn't breathe well and my chest always felt like there was a large book on it. After 14 months of this agony and two unneeded surgeries I finally decided what did I have to lose and I went to the best psychologist.

Guess what? Three weeks later and on the right meds I am doing better. Not a 100% better but I know I will at least get there. They did biofeedback and my sympathetic nervous system was WAY out of whack. Then they did my muscle tension which is supposed to be between 0 and 2 but mine was 9.8 which is why my chest felt so tight and asthmatic all the time. There was so much I learned about how your brain functions, sends messages to your spine which then sends it to other parts of your body that my symptoms made sense. There really is no medical mystery to it other than the fact biologically I just have a very sensitive sympathetic nervous system and a brief period of major stressors finally sent me over the edge. It happens and now I just need to get better.

My advice to you is to see one of these behavioral psychologist that work with psychiatrist if you need to be medicated. Your PCP (primary care physician) will always dose you too low (that is what they taught me) and the key to getting better and not having side effects on these meds is to have the right amount in your blood stream and the same intervals every day. Again I can not tell you how much better my life is 3 weeks later. I still have shortness of breath but NOT 24/7. And when mine first started 14 months ago I only had the chest tightness/shortness of breath every so often. It was over the course of not being able to find out where the real problem was coming from that the situation became this bad and the symptoms were all day long.

Good luck and let me know how you are doing.

stimiak3,
What reputable Dr. did you find to do biofeedback?? I too am in SA, looking for a good one dr. for biofeedback. I too have chest pain/tightness and muscle spasms and the family dr. is saying biofeedback would be a good for some relief. I am also doing accupunture and it has helped some also. Thanks for any info.

South Texas Behavioral Medicine is the name of the place. That is all I'm allowed to post so please look them up either on your insurance plan or via the internet. Good luck and I hope you get the help you need!

Re: what causes shortness of breath with anxiety

I don't know why they would tell you that because I just had an appt and had biofeedback done. Please call again because sometimes I have problems with the front counter staff. Instead of saying you need to see someone who does biofeedback tell them that you have severe anxiety with panic/anxiety attacks. They will match you with someone who does the biofeedback. But seriously I JUST had my check up last week and they used it on me like they do for every appt to check on my progress. Please keep me posted but DO NOT let the receptionist staff tell you otherwise. My friend also goes there and has problems with them as well that the psychologists and psychiatrists are well aware of and are handling.

Good luck to you too and keep me posted. This program is really helping me with the mixture of the meds they have me on temporarily (sp?). I finally feel like there is some hope I will get my life back.

Thanks again. I will try the phone number again. I hope I am calling the right place.... works with the Methodist Healthcare system/ Medical Center area .. correct?? Also is any of the services covered by your insurance? I was told biofeedback is not generally covered, but over services are.
And great to hear you are feeling better, best of luck to you!!!

stimiak3 how are you???

Hi Stimiak3,
Are you still on the boards? If so how are you now. I finally found the place you have received treatment. I called, then verified insurance and called again for appt. STILL waiting for return call but hoping it will be soon.
I am very interested in knowing how you are now several weeks/months later. Good luck and hope to hear from you!!
