Introduction and question from a newbe

I'm new on here and been looking for a friendly place to seek help and hopefully help others. My name is Michael and I'm 31 year old professional person from Newcastle, England and have been suffering with stress for over 10 years and just recently started to see a counselor.

I suffer from a range of issues like dizziness, tiredness, headaches, depression (I'm not depressed just depressed because of my stress if that makes sense), low self esteem, chest pains etc.

Can anyone recommend any good relaxation books, mediation books or other good books to help with stress. I'm desperate to combat this condition as it's ruling my life.

Re: Introduction and question from a newbe

hi mike because of your job do you take your work home with you and spend lots of time on your own ,if you do you have to create time for yourself and be with friends and go out and enjoy yourself because its not all about work otherwise stress builds up and could turn to depression as you are not dealing with it.
Give your brain a rest mate ,the books will help and go to the gym brilliant for someone like you and eat healthy no junk food .
try and go out and socialise if you dont already it helps ok

Re: Introduction and question from a newbe

Cheers for the reply optimistic kid. I don't take my work home as I work in IT but do have a stressful job. My issues stem from my unhappy childhood (nothing sexual or violence). I have taken that into my adulthood and I think it's built up over the years. Now I have a young son and don't want him growing up like me I got help. I do have a good group of friends and go out but never feel like I can enjoy myself fully and tend to want to go home early. I was never like this in my teenage years and still have the same group of mates.

I think over the last couple of years my body has been reacting badly with pains and twitches and just feeling spaced out all the time. It feels like my body is shutting down sometimes.

Re: Introduction and question from a newbe

ok mike didnt know the backgound.
Well obviously the opposite of stress is destress and i would say exercise on a cross trainer in the gym does just that. I had pains and twitches ,being tense and uptight caused the pains and if i could relax a bit came the twitches caused by nerves. The twitches were above my eye and my finger dew to nerves.
I got out of the problem by distracting myself and thinking of pleasant things i.e where do iwant to be in a couple of years and i made it my goal to find out what worked for me to get out of the mental problems i had but i was like you . Distraction and exercise are 2 powerful components to beat your stress so have a go
