Celexa vs. Paxil

Can someone tell me the difference between these two SSRIs? I have just been discontinued from Paxil and changed to Celexa (for side-effect reasons). However, I read everywhere how Paxil is so wonderful for Panic Attacks and OCD (as well as depression of course)... but I don't see that anywhere in the Celexa literature. I have GAD/PAD/OCD/SAD, but not major depression. Paxil worked wonderfully, except the side effects were terrible. I supplement with Xanax as well.

Anyway, back to the issue: What is the difference? What properties does one have that the other doesn't? Can someone assist me on this?

Thanks!

Evan

Re: Celexa vs. Paxil

Evan, I've been on Celexa for about three months and it has almost completely wiped out my anxiety. No more panic attacks - although I also do Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I still feel spacey sometimes, but I am managing that more too. When I get out and have fun it seems to subside, leading everyone to believe the spaciness is a bi-product of anxiety. I am on 30mg of Celexa but slowly ramped up over time. The sides can be annoying but if you stick with it, they diminish within a week of any dose change. Write me with any questions... seth

Re: Celexa vs. Paxil

I also was on paxil for 4 years ,then switched to celexa.I have been on it 4 weeks, and I still am having some trouble with my panic attacks.I have panic disorder,GAD,and agoraphobia.I too am seeing a shrink, and learning cbt. There is really not alot of difference between any of the ssri"s,they all do basicly the same thing, but some people have more/less side effects on each one,and some work better for some people than others.I'm only on 20mg,so maybe I'll see some better changes as I go to 30mg.I don't have any side effects, aside from dry mouth, but drinking lots of water solves that!Back to your topic, the properties are the same more or less, you just need to find the right one for you, side effects vary from person to person,so stick with it!I ramble, sorry!Good luck, keep us posted with your progress!!Kristi
