Stroke Deep Sleep

My father is 88 years of age, and was previously in good health. On November 29th he apparently had a small stroke, then on December 9th he had a second stroke. The neurologists determined that the strokes were because of an previously undiagnosed heart Afib condition. The neurologists described the strokes as being medium strokes. They have stated that due to where the strokes were, that he would have the capacity to regain movement, but probably not back to 100%. When he was in the hospital ICU he was in a deep sleep for about four days (from December 9th - 13th.) He eventually began to awake somewhat. However, three days ago (December 27th), he fell back into a deep sleep. We have been told that the deep sleeps are actually a normal part of the healing process. However, we have also been told that sometimes a person doesn't awake from such a deep sleep. In the hospital he also developed pneumonia, but according to the latest chest x-ray the pneumonia is now gone. Any thoughts or input would be appreciated, as we have never experienced this before. We are told to hold onto hope, and that each stroke is different. It is an emotional roller coaster.

Re: Stroke Deep Sleep

Sorry to hear about your father. My experience with stroke is that sleep is the way the brain heals. I slept a lot the first 3-4 months. Seems like I got worse before getting better. For the most part you can't even tell I had a stroke by looking at me. There is always hope. Be patient. Talk to him. Ask questions and share your concerns with the neurologist.
Sincerely,
Iwamura
