| Re: Stroke due to lack of oxygen
So sorry to hear of the stroke. If your Father had a cardiac arrest and his brain was deprived of oxygen for a significant period, he may have a hypoxic brain injury in conjunction with a stroke. Depending on what caused the cardiac arrest, he may be at risk of another? Recovery alone from a stroke can be promising, particularly in the 12 months following the stroke. However, with a hypoxic brain injury the recovery can be much slower and for many patients recovery can be miminal. A number of people can have profound disability including locked in syndrome and permanent vegetative states. Sorry if I sound very negative but hypoxic brain injuries are usually very disabling. Please ask the consultant physician to what degree is the brain scan showing hypoxic brain injury and what areas of the brain are atrophied (severely damaged). Sometimes it can take a number of weeks for the scan to show full damage in hypoxic patients as opposed to traumatic brain injury. Wishing you and your father love and hope he recovers well.
