a stroke at 34?????

I'm only 34 years old.

I went to hospital yesterday with the worst headache I've ever had, and was told, after a cat scan and a lumbar puncture, that I'd had a mini-stroke. I'm still in shock, and I'm terrified. Anyone else out there my age with this? I would appreciate any information, since I'm still waiting on the doctors, and am just sitting here stewing in my own juices, as it were.
Thanks all!
ZIm

Talking Re: a stroke at 34?????

Hi Zimnah, sorry can not really help you regarding your age, but my step father had a stroke 2 weeks ago which has resulted in him losing all his left side he is 64 years old and a young 64year old at that, he went to work felt fine went to bed and awoke and could not move so I do not believe that age and fitness has alot to do with matters, I have even found out since researching strokes that babies and children can have them although un common they do happen, stay positive and my best wishes are with you.

Re: a stroke at 34?????

Hi Zim,

I'm so sorry to hear of your stroke. I didn't feel quite qualified to offer much help before (I'm a newbie), but if I could offer any emotional help age-wise, I'll try. I'm 36 and had my first strokes last month. They are still putting me through the wringer of tests. I am still learning all I can about strokes, undifferentiated connective tissue disease, lupus, and now CADASIL. I've had other medical problems (heart) for years, but this is all new and frustrating. (See my original post of "frustrated and need help" for story, if you want.)

The postings seem to go in spurts. Hang in there. Take care of yourself.
Health & happiness-

Re: a stroke at 34?????

Sorry I didn't respond to your post earlier but I just read it today. I too had a stroke at an early age. I was 33. It was this past winter. It would be one hell of an understatement to say that I was shocked. After many yucky tests and too much time in the hospital they discovered that the cause of the stroke was a disease called Benign Angiopathy of the Central Nervous System (BACNS Disease). It causes the blood vessels in my head to spasm. It is a form of Cerebral Vasculitis and is very rare. It only occurs in women between the ages of 30 and 39, they don't know what causes it and they don't know how to cure it. I take calcium channel blockers to stop the spasms and to prevent another stroke and there are certain things that I can't do and certain types of drugs that cannot take. I was very, very lucky as this disease affects all the blood vessels in my head and the stroke could have occured in any part of my brain. It was in the right parietal lobe and affected my memory, eyesight, balance and cognitive skills. Most things have improved a great deal. I still have some memory and cognitive problems but for the most part I'm doing pretty good.

I hope you are well and have gotten some good info and I hope not too much time has passed since your post and that you are actually reading this! Good luck!

Re: a stroke at 34?????

I had a stroke at 39. I put off suggested surgery til 43. I regret not having the surgery earlier, but I was afraid of the unknown. Luckily I had one of the best surgeons in the US. Everything turned out great. I was blessed.
I made sure to get more than one opinion. The technology today combined with the surgeons knowledge makes brain surgery recover so much better.
I wish you good luck on your journey.

JB
