Unhappy Father had a stroke...

I need some advice here please...my father recently had a stroke 8-7-04 and lost the right side of his body...I think my Mom got him to the hospital in time because the Dr.s say because he got the feeling in his leg back fast and he had no drooping face or slurring speech that he should get the feeling back in his arm...well here we are almost a month now and still his arm is deadlike. We just brought him home from the hospital today...while he was in the hospital he did go thru therapy to learn how to walk again and so forth...he is very weak like still and because he doesn't have the use of his arm its pretty scary for all of us...I'm afraid that if he is alone he might fall or get bored and start to walk someplace in the house or something like that...not only is he recovering from this stroke but we're dealing with cancer also...back in May he was diagnosed with cancer and couldn't have surgery because he has a weak heart...so we've been going thru radiation & chemo 5 days a week...so needless to say my Father has been thru alot lately. I know there's a device out there that you can wear around your neck in case you fall or something...does anyone know what I'm talking about and how do I go about finding one for my Father? Does insurance cover this stuff also? Any advice or suggestions anyone has would be greatly appreciated Thank you and God Bless

Re: Father had a stroke...

Hi DoeZ,

I just found this site and can relate with your post. My father also had a stroke. He is doing well in his recovery. His stroke affected his walking and his eyesight. He was also recently diagnosed with cancer. He was in the hospital this 9-7-04 for a search for any cancerous tumors. Talk about stressful. My parents live close by and I am the one doing their errand, was driving my Dad around to Dr. appt's, etc. It's not easy with 3 kids at home but I would do anything for my parents. I have bookmarked this site so we can support each other. [ removed - no off board info ] Wishing you and your family the best.

Re: Father had a stroke...

Thank You very much. We just brought him home last Fri. and he's still a little wobbly on his feet and he still has no right arm...A nurse is supposed to coming to the house everyday for his therapy on his walking and his arm. We haven't even discussed his cancer treatments yet because we're dealing with one thing at a time. I found what I was looking for originally...it's called "Lifeline" so I looked into it and he said he didn't want to spend the money for it...I was really upset that he put spending money in front of something that could save his life if ever something happened and he was alone...I spoke with my brothers who live out of state and they said they would split this with me if things got worse.

I feel for you...at least I know there's someone else out there that is going thru and doing the things I'm doing for my parents. They took care of me for how many years and now it's my turn I guess. Wouldn't be right if I didn't. You and your family are in my prayers . Good Luck to you.

Re: Father had a stroke...

Hi DoeZ,

Whoops, guess we can't email each other. (Sorry moderator) How old is your Father? Mine is 70. He had his stroke about a year ago. I remember all the therapists coming to the house. Can't say they were great though. Just asked him to walk around the yard. My Dad was very determined to get back in shape fast and forced himself to walk. His is back to walking, golfing, driving, etc. His eyesight took longer to get better. Actually, neither his walking or his eyesight is back to where it was before, but it's good enough for him to get around.

Have you thought of getting your Dad a cell phone? You can program it so it will call you (or 911) with one push of a button. It could be cheaper or at least easier on payments. My Dad has one that costs less than $10 a month. He has it in case something happens while he's driving.

So far my Dad has had 2 surgeries for cancer and the one exploratory surgery (not sure what it's called, but they place a camera inside to look for tumors). Did your Dad have that done? My Dad said it was worse than the surgeries he had. My Dad had skin cancer (the bad kind) on his ear. They had to remove part of the inside of his ear, so he's now deaf in that ear. Things haven't been easy. It's so hard to see your parents suffer. It's nice to have someone to talk with about this. I was really feeling alone. My brothers don't live nearby, so basically, it's just me.

Wishing you the best too. Hang in there!

Re: Father had a stroke...

Hi Debbi,

My Dad already has a cell phone. He's with verizon and I'm not sure that they have anything like that. He had his stroke 8-7-04 and like I said...we just brought him home from the hospital. He has stomach cancer...it's right where the stomach and the asophagus meet...they call it a gy-unit...he can't have surgery because his heart is too weak so we had to go thru radiation & chemo 5 days a week. We were doing really well there and then his last treament was the big one that really knocked him...he lost alot of his hair and alot of weight because he was throwing up everything...he basically stopped eating because he was afraid of throwing up all the time...he got weaker and looks frail...but since being in the hospital he looks better...his color is good. My father is only gonna be 69 on 10-6-04 but he's already had open heart surgery(5 bypass) he's full blown diabetic and high blood pressure...so take all that and add it up with his cancer and now his stroke...1 day at a time is all we can do right now. Neither of my brothers are nearby and I too have 2 kids...they're a little older so they help and take care of me moreless. Take care for now...it's time for work
