Hello,

I'm here to seek more information about demyelination . My mother 73 years old has suffered a stroke 3 months ago caused left sided weakness, deviation of angle of mouth to right side. This was sudden in onset but gradually progressed after a period of improvement initially. But after a week she urge incontinance and difficulty in speaking and gradully became weak and drowsy. The doctors didn't give much hope to us may be because she is 73 and discharged but I'm sure I'm gonna make her stand on her leg and walk. Can someone please help me knowing:-

1. What all precautions I should take to avoid further stroke?
2. What all food/vegetables sould I feed her to maintain her physical strength? She has sugar level between 132-174 and she is in Ryle's tube feed.
3. Generally she lock her lips when we make her sit. Is it common?
4. Finally, What all technique should we adopt to feed her orally? She takes few spoon of water and orange juice everyday but sometimes coughs. She asks for food when she feels hungry.

I'm sorry to hear about her situation, I can tell you it is very hard to "know" just what to do next. As far as her eating, she may have to eat pureed food because she may have problems swallowing, try baby food, it may work. Also the coughing is due to the muscles in her throat being weak and the liquids are going down the wrong way, this can lead to pneumonia, the liquid can go straight to the lungs and you should watch for a rise in temperature indicating an infection. Do manual exercise if she doesn't want to exercise on her own, moving arms and legs yourself, she may need a brace eventually. If you keep up the support she will get better, There is one t hing that can be said about stroke and that is there is hope. She will improve, but it is going to take time and her rehab needs to be aggressive. She will get depressed and she will get anxeity, but these are things that can be dealt with (anti-depressants and stimulants). Good luck.
