post stroke headache - Stroke Message Board

Hi,
I am a 36 year old woman, nonsmoker, fit, healthy, no prescription drugs. I suffered a stroke on Jan. 1. The MRI showed a 9mm spot on the left side. I suffered some loss of speech and use of my right hand, my speech is now totally back to normal and my hand is getting better. Despite a zillion tests,six days in the PCU unit, and visits from every on call Dr. in the hospital, there is no definitive cause for my stroke. They are now calling it a migraine-related stroke. Although I have a history of stubborn headaches and head trauma (I train horses professionally) they were not severe in nature, just pesky. However, since the stroke I have suffered three severe headaches. In the hospital, these were treated with Lortabs, now I am on Ultram (easier on my stomach) but the Ultram didn't even touch last night's headache. It starts on the left side (behind my eye) and progresses until it feels as though my head is going to boil out my ears. After six hours (the prescribed dosage time between Ultram doses) I repeated the Ultram, and finally it abated. My husband is in favor of taking me back to the hospital next time it happens, my regular doctor is out of the office today. On my last visit he said that some headache was to be expected following a stroke.
Any advice??? They usually start in the evening or l late afternoon.

When you where talking about about it start behind the eye and feeling it coming out the ears are you talking about the headache or how the meds. Work, im assuming the headache but i just want to be sure. I have a headache that I have had for almost 3 hours now. Ive even taken some meds to help it but it doesn't seem to go away. But, its on my left side only behind my left eye and it feels like its going to come out my left ear. I just dont want to be overreacting. I have had a history of panic attacks that left me in the hospital i just dont want to end up over there and find out it was nothing and embarres myself again.

My husband is 55, and had a stroke in August of 2006. He has severe headache/migranes that nothing will touch. He is losing at least 3 days a month, coming home with a headache so bad he can't continue to work. He has not been given any narcotics, but is given medication that is supposed to prevent them. We are going to try ice packs, and see if that may reduce the severity of them. He is not in good physical shape, smokes, is overweight, has high cholesterol, and his blood pressure is under control. An odd thing about his headaches, his blood pressure tends to drop when he has the headaches. His stroke was caused by a clot, and he has had at least one mini stroke since August 2006. He is on blood thinners to prevent clots.
