average recovery time after stroke?
Hi, My mom had what the dr. called a "major stroke" on May 21st. It was on the right side of her brain. She is extremely lucky because it seems to have only affected her speech & swallowing. From the hospital, she went to a rehab & is scheduled to be released June 14th. She lives in assisted living & loves it. One of her therapists said she has very slight weakness in her left arm & leg. She has been eating ground food & nectar stage liquids. They are gradually introducing more foods. She is 89 years old & all I can say is that she is amazing. To quote the dr. she is making a "remarkable recovery". Someone mentioned to me that it takes about 3 months to get back to how one was pre stroke (with some limitations I woud suppose). I notice a difference in her as far as memory goes; a little repetetive. She also had been knitting before & I brought her things to work on. Today she told me that she couldn't remember how to cast on stitches. I tried to show her for 1/2 hr., but to no avail. My dad is in a nursing home with Alzheimer's & she really doesn't talk too much about him. The assisted living where my mom lives is across the parking lot from my dad. She used to cook for him & go see him all the time. Is this part of the stroke that she doesn't talk about him that much? I'm an only child so I've been running back & forth to see both of them. Just a bit of info on mom: 5 yrs. ago was hospitalized with conjestive heart failure & arrythmia. Last August, she had a valve replaced & did fantastic. Had been getting very tired of late & went to see dad every other day. Brought her to the dr & he was going to put her on coumadin after a stool sample to check for any bleeding. The next day, she had the stroke. Anyone with any input????? Thanks, nananuzz
