Ischemic stroke - Stroke Message Board

Hello. Five days ago my dad suffered a stroke. His complications are paralysis on left side. He is able to speak and has suffered no memory loss or loss of movement on right side. The doctors say the cause was ischemic and not too serious. however, after five days he only has feeling on left side, no movement. is there a concern here or will movement return in time. does anyone have any similar experience? thank you. james

hi, my name is tawny and my father had a stroke 120 days ago and his left side is paralyzed......he did suffer some mental confusion also, yet he turned 83 last month and also has parkinsons. he goes to PT and OT 5 days a week and feels very sad about his lack of progress. he wants an electric wheelchair real bad, he can't stand the one they "built" for him.....yet, he did get alot back after around 3 months, he can eat with one hand, think clearer, etc.

Once again it seems the medical establishment has totally failed in informing stroke survivors what the next steps are. I also was totally paralyzed on the left side, it is now two years and i can walk with a cane, after much PT and OT. Your dad will need therapy to recover as much as possible. Look up these stroke forums, they seem to have the best information. My arm is not doing too much and nothing in the hand. Ask your Dr. what therapies have the most success, they most likely will have no idea. My doctors concept was; You had a stroke, deal with it.

hi, from what i''ve learned that he will need alot of pt and ot.....and support, love, and distractions, anything, tv, music, library audio books, etc. i'm struggling thru the days with my dad, he appreciates any little thing i can do for him. he loves pop with alot of ice! it's so hard to say timewise of recovery, my father, 3 months post stroke feels hopeless, yet he has come a long way from those first weeks after the stroke. best of luck to you.
