stroke and fatigue - Stroke Message Board

My father had a stroke a couple of months ago and was back to work in 3 weeks - doing good- but....He is lethargic, fatigued- Is this expected or can it be the meds - ramipril and plavix. Has always been a non-stop kinda guy.thanks

I think it is incredible that your dad was able to get back to work three weeks following his stroke!

A stroke is a major brain injury, and can cause many after-effects. Fatigue and lethargy would certainly seem normal after such an event.

I survived 4 strokes 5 years ago, and it has taken me all this time to regain my speech, motor skills, decision making, reading, writing, and just thinking straight! I am a long way from working again.

Encourage your dad to take his time recovering into his "new" energy level, and don't push it too hard. I have noticed my post-stroke lifestyle to be much differant than my previous pace...and it takes time to figure that out for each person.

Fatigue is incredibly common in stroke survivors. I don't think doctors have any clue in how to treat it. When one forum asked what bothered survivors the most about 70-80% said it was fatigue.

I had my stroke Friday 13th Oct. 2006. I still deal with constant fatigue. Run sweeper - go lay down. Grocery store & lay down before putting groceries away. It gets frustrating. I keep thinking stamina should be returning. I went to stroke support at Herrick hospital in Berkeley and met a gal who had stroke like mine (same side) hers was 7 years ago and she is just now back to normal. Can hardly tell she had a stroke. It sure gave me hope.
