Just returned from hospital and anxious to get any feedback from those on this board with more experience.
I know Iwill need to make an appointment with my Mother's Dr - although this is easier said then done, and may not happen until early next week when I can chase him down.
My mother had a stroke on the RH side of her brain about 9 months ago which affected her LH side. After initially slurring her speech badly and losing her LH arm use, she recovered quickly and was allowed home after about 4 weeks and to the outside eye she returned to a normal life (apart from complaining about headaches)
I am told the stroke was from a blood clot rather than bleed.
Yesterday we found her in bed and she had another stroke on the other side of her brain (the scan again showed a clot not bleed)
This time seemds to be much more serious, as she cannot speak and does not seem to recognise anyone (apart from a few fleeting moments on admission when she seemed to recognise us)
On visiting today she wants to sleep 24 hours, and for the few seconds that she woke - she didn't seem to be aware of her surroundings.Because of her almost permanet sleep, I m told they may try and insert a tube for food as they cannot assess her swallow.
I'm realy after any advice or any similar experiences that may give me hope that we may get her back in mind. As you would imagine my initial worry is that the poor lady has only a life to look forward to at best that is very limited and does not involve her knowing or recognising her family.
I appreciate this is very early days - however very distressing.
i'm so sorry about your mom. i don't have a lot of info about strokes, but i wanted you to know that your post was read, and tell you there is a wonderful lady that frequents the stroke boards.....her screen name is writeleft and she always has a lot of great info, and is very helpful and positive and compassionate.......I'm sure she will be around soon to help. Also by replying to your post, it goes back up to the top so more people will see it. I wish you and your mom all the best.....hang in there, you're not alone.
Dear rose..I am so sorry about your mom but you have found a great place for information and support. I had a right brain stroke about the same time as your mom but did not get off as easily on left side recovery. A left side stroke, from my reading, often affects language and cognitive functioning. So it is early days yet to know how this stroke will affect her. The sleeping is very usual and is of benefit to her healing.
Please know that I will include your mom in my "stroke friends" prayers. I hope her deficits are not too severe and you see some recovery for her soon and that her dr. explains all this to you. Feel free to ask anything here or even just to vent
5 days after stroke and my Mother has started waking for short periods during the day.
Cannot speak , Right hand side looks bad & not working and still not eaten as cannot assess her swallow. Hospital talking about inserting a tube but not done yet.
The good news is there seems to be some recognition. She held my hand whilst awake and seemd to nod when I asked her if she was tired. Also looked at the window when I referred to the sunny weather and tried to smile at my wife at least 3 times.Small items but progress from 24 hour sleep.
I am told by the nurse that she has asked her to smile, which she has done straight away.
I think it sounds positive progress, but the fact that she can't talk and hasn't eaten is still a massive worry
gismo she's moving in the right direction.....
be patient, she will improve.....
is she getting some type of therapy?
Visited today and now being fed with a tube into her stomach. Right side seems out of action but she said the word 'Yes' to 3 direct questions - although unable to speak more than this despite trying.
Does give facial expressions at times in response to questions. Seems to wander off at times staring at bright colours on clothes or even out of the window, but still signs of improvement.
Saw Doc yesterday who says it was a big stroke based on the fact that it was a Left brain stroke - nothing else. Not impressed with him at all as he didn't realise she was communicating at all, He was pretty pessimistic but was basing this on very little.
