osteoarthritis of the knee

Hi,
Wonder if anyone has heard of cartlidge transplant of the knee. Just come back from hospital to see my consultant. I am 46 with grade 3 osteoarthritis of the knee. I have been told that I am too young for TKR even though I live with constant chronic knee pain, I use a walking stick and can't get about like I used to. Anyway, my consultant has spoken about doing a cartlidge transplant where they take cells out from the knee and send them away to a lab to be grown and then do an operation to put the new grown cells back into the damaged knee????? Don't know much about this procedure ane been told that it may not even work. I would appreciate any comments or help and advice if anyone has ever heard of this.
Thanks for any help or suggestions!!!
