3 vaccinations required for flu protection this year - Swine Flu (H1N1) Message Board

One vaccination is required for the regular flu and two are required for the swine flu. And they recommend that all three be given on separate days/weeks. This is in case there are complications, so you will know which shot caused it. And they think the two swine flu shots will be more effective if spaced appart by a few weeks.

This is the way I understand it; perhaps someone else has different information about it. If there are doubts about the safety of the swine flu shots, I wonder how wise it is for a healthy older person to get them.

I haven't heard of the second swine flu vax.

I know (unless you have serious lung problems) anyone who was alive in 1957 doesn't need the swine flu (H1N1) vaccine. A version of the swine flu passed through north America in 1957, giving older folks a natural resistance to our present day bug. http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination/acip.htm

I guess that would mean IF you were alive and GOT the flu in 1957. What if you don't remember if you got it and have no way to find out?

I know I have in some years had 2 flu shots....one at the beginning of the flu season and one later. You lose the effectiveness after 2-3 months and if you get a shot in October(as planned) it would wear off by January when the season peaks. So I can see why 2 shots are recommended for swine flu. And then 1 shot for the regular flu that is expected.

I am immune suppressed due to treatment for rheumatoid arthritis so I'll get at least 3 shots and then some! Why risk dying of something that can, in most cases, be prevented or made much less virulent.

No, anyone alive at that time has some level of immunity. Immunity is based on exposure to a similar virus not full blown infection.

I still haven't read anything about a second swine flu shot. But if they have it I'll take it too!
