Swine Flu, AND Viral Encephilitis and Meningitis

Swine Flu, Viral Encephilitis AND Viral Meningitis
My mother is currently in a Florida, Jupiter Hospital and diagnosed with swine flu H1N1 (positive), viral encephalitis AND viral menigitis. Four Doctors (2 neurologists and two infectious disease specialits) have been aggressively treating her with steriods (deramethazone) and tamiflu. She was in ICU for a total of 12 days. She showed signs of progress after 3 days of aggressive steriod treatments. The steriods reducued her brain swelling and she appeared to be getting better. They discharged her and she was ready to leave the hospital. Within hours, she relapsed, and the hallucinations and extreme headaches returned. Another MRI was ordered and the brain swelling was back. She was never released. We are going to air ambulance her,(charter a private medical jet) and get her back to our home hospital this Monday. We have another neuroligist that is taking over once we get her back home. We were told that there is no known treatment for being diagnosed positive with Swine Flu, AND Viral Meningitis AND Encephilits - ALL at the same time. She almost died. The CDC,(Centers for Disease Control) The Florida Health Department, FL State Department, and The Department of Veroligy are all being briefed on her symptoms and conditions. Other doctors in Texas are also involved - they have young patients that have Swine Flue and Encephilitis. My mother is 72 years old and was in PERFECT health before contracting H1NI. The specialists and the CDC do not know how to treat her and dont' know why or how the swine flu virus attacked her brain and her spine. Very rare. The docs ruled out Equestrian, Herpes, West Nile, Lines, Shingles and many other virus's. Need your help if you know of others that have the same complications or have comments.

Re: Swine Flu, AND Viral Encephilitis and Meningitis

My son contracted swine flu in late August and started showing neurological issues with 48 hours. He was a very healthy child prior to the H1N1 and very intelligent child, all honors classes. Since the flu, he has shown many tics and OCD tendencies. He went from being able to read at a college level to not being able to read or write. He has had an MRI, EEG and several blood tests. He has elevated titers : Cat Scratch fever and RA.
We finally made it to a pediatric neurologist , after seeing an immunologist, eye specialist, pyschitrist, PCP etc...all were very interested in this case, but none can diagnose him. The ped Neuro started him on an IVIG on Friday..praying this will help.
I think the H1N1 is totally responsible for all of my son's health problems and as more people contract this flu, we will see more of these strange issues develop.
Good luck with your mother....

I will pray for her. Prayer is the best answer. Good luck!

Re: Swine Flu, AND Viral Encephilitis and Meningitis

Have your ped doctor look in to steriod treatment. Swine Flu and Enchephilitis are more common in younger children. Very rare in my mothers case becasue of her age. I am aware that Doctors in Texas ARE treating young kids with Swine and Enchephilitis with steriods to reduce the brain swelling. There may be some permanent cognitive behavior. I'll check my notes and get back to you with the name of the steriod they are using. Tracy

Re: Swine Flu, AND Viral Encephilitis and Meningitis

the name of the steriod medication is deramethazone. They started my mom on IV at 10mgs and then 4 mgs every 6 hours. This is aggressvie treatment. I know they can give oral medications in pill form and a much lower dose.

I wish you the best. My mom is not getting better and now they have scheduled a brain biopsy. She is the only patient in the country that tested positive for swine, and got meningitis and encephilits at the age of 72. Perfect health prior too.
Infectous Disease and CDC are monitoring her, but I'll bet you'll never hear it on the news!

Re: Swine Flu, AND Viral Encephilitis and Meningitis

I am in Tampa, Fl and experienced many of the same things as your mom. Right after I recuperated from H1N1, I developed viral meningitis, encephalitis and varicella zoster (shingles). I was hospitalized for a week and sent home for supportive care. One month later I am still not back at work due to fatigue, pain in my head, loss of concentration, loss of words and when I walk I veer off to the right. I am seeing another neurologist in about two weeks as no one knows if my symptoms are from medications they prescribed or the above illnesses. I don't understand why there isn't more on the news about the long term potential problems/illnesses from H1N1. Hang in there with your mom..... its a slow and steady process and she will need a lot of patience and TLC. She has been added to my prayer list.

Re: Swine Flu, AND Viral Encephilitis and Meningitis

I've probably had swine flu twice this year. The first time was early this year when I got CVT - cerebral venous thrombosis, but it was mild. Then earlier in Nov I got it again, although my respiratory symptoms were almost nonexistant. I was treated for bacterial meningitis and, subsequent to discharge, my doc said I probably had viral meningitis. The probable virus was swine flu as my daughter got it a few days before I started having symptoms. Besides tamiflu, antibiotics and pain meds, I had been taking Diamox (acetazolamide) to reduce intercranial pressure associated with CVT. The Diamox helped reduce the headache significantly. It kind of dehydrates the brain. It is used as a prophylactic for mountain climbers to control brain swelling at very high altitudes. I don't know if it would help your mother or not, but it wouldn't hurt to ask. Best of luck.

Re: Swine Flu, AND Viral Encephilitis and Meningitis

Have your docs do an MRI. My mother developed leisions in the brain that contributed to the dizzy spells, headaches and hallucinations. The docs were in the process of doing a biopsy on the brain when the most recent MRI she had determined that the leisions were getting smaller, so they cancelled the procedure. They were looking for 1. Viral Encephalopathy or 2. Isolate Vascilitis in the brain.
After a month, my mom is finally home and recovering. She is weak, has minor short term memory problems. They said this could go on for weeks or months until she fully recovered. In the meantime they have kept her on low doses of steriods, 2mgs every 6 hours orally. Not so funny that this is not public knowledge and broadcast so others are aware of the dangers of this virus. Keep in touch. Tracy
