| New US CDC estimate for 2009 H1N1 flu
The latest midlevel US CDC estimates for 2009 novel H1N1 flu in the US to January 16 2010 are:
Cases: 57 million
0-17: 19 million
18-64: 33 million
65+: 5 million
Hospitalizations: 257,000
0-17: 82,000
18-64: 150,000
65+: 25,000
Deaths: 11,690
0-17: 1,230
18-64: 8,980
65+: 1,480

Note that a "typical seasonal flu" tends to result in 36,000 deaths, but about 90% in the 65+ age group (i.e. about 33,000 in the 65+ age group and about 3,600 in the 0-64 age group). So it appears that the 2009 novel H1N1 flu is more dangerous to the 0-64 age group (nearly 3 times as many deaths), but less dangerous to the 65+ age group (about 1/22 as many deaths), compared to "typical seasonal flu".
