There's this book, a small paperback, at Barnes and Noble bookstore that tells all about how to kiss - what ladies like, and how to do it. Easy reading, not some clinical thick sort of book. Anyway, I highly recommend it.
To answer your question, "normal" is such a weird term, and I agree that kissing is a personal thing, but it's also a personal thing between two people, not just one. I think kissing with your mouth open and no tongue would not be as sensual, and even odd in that your tongue would get in the way while trying to not get in the way :-)
