What is a normal BMI?

I was just wondering what a normal BMI is?

My BMI is 16.2 and I didnt know if that was too low or if it was ok.
The doctor for my yearly physical said I was 62 percent in the height... but like 40 percent in weight for my age group....

I was just wondering what would be considered normal!

Thanks!

17 to 22 BMI is normal for anyone. You have to take into factor, your height, and body weight. Your BMI seems quite normal, and I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: What is a normal BMI?

I've heard that the normal BMI is about 19 to 24. 25 and over being overweight. Are you sure that your BMI is 16.2 it seems a little low to me. If you tell me your height in metres and your weight in kg I can double check for you.

Re: What is a normal BMI?

While a 16.2 is fairly low, I wouldn't worry about it. I believe the BMI system is calculated by the average American. I'm not 100% sure though. Either way, as long as your Doctor says you are healthy, you are fine.

1.62 meters tall

41 kilograms

I am really thin.
The doctor said I was fine so I'm sure I am... I just got kinda confused cuz I realized that was below the range...

Thanks!

Re: What is a normal BMI?

Hi, I actually calculate your BMI to be about 15.6. You said your doctor said this was fine did he/she check that your diet was sufficient (just curious).

Re: What is a normal BMI?

no... my doctor just did the usual... she weighed, measured me...

She didnt really ask me many questions... In the middle of it, I was given a shot for bacterial minigitis, and it hit a nerve and I passed out... That kinda ended all discussion!

Re: What is a normal BMI?

Uh. IT depends how you work it out.

The TECHNICAL way is;

weight (kg)/ height (m) x height (m)

A healthy BMI is between 20 - 25. Trust me, I know. Below 20 is underweight, under 18.5 is doctors warning signs. Below 17.5 you're physically classified as Anorexic and under 15 you're emanciated.

Re: What is a normal BMI?

Umm... a bunch of people from my school joke about me being anorexic... I have no problems (like that) whatsoever. I just can't eat very much. I get really full really easy... like half a sandwich... and I am stuffed! I always eat food.... I don't diet. I can't stand fried foods though. Haven't eaten those in almost a year. It's not because they make you gain weight... I just don't like fried foods...

My mom has been trying to get me to overstuff myself to eat more... but then I just feel sick!

Re: What is a normal BMI?

If you feel full after eating very little food maybe you have a problem with your colon (generally colon, sometimes other parts of the digestive system). Very mild probs with the colon can cause trouble but its best to get it checked out. The fat thing could indicate a general slowing down of the digestive system some people, even those with v. mild digestive disorders can have a decreased ability to metabolise fat. Anyway fried food is not good for you I presonally try to keep it to a minimum. However some fat is good for you and should try to incorporate it into your diet.

You do n't have to answer this but: do you have symptoms other than weight loss. Is it poss that you see another doc just concerned b/c she should have asked you this question.

Re: What is a normal BMI?

Hi Ms Universe
Has there been any bowel changes, such as intermittent diarrhoea.

Just a question my mum asked.
