There seem to be alot of things that interfere with the absorption of thyroid hormones, so I take mine at 5 am usually, way before I eat or drink anything or take any other medicines. When I got my prescription filled, the pharmacy gave me a printout on the med. It says to take it before breakfast on an empty stomach and to not take it within 4 hours of a long list of other medicines and/or supplements.
I take my second dose of cytomel around 3 or 4 pm at least an hour before I eat.
I take my synthroid in the morning before breakfast. Very much the same reasons as the other people who have replied. BTW, a friend of mine took her birth control with the thyroid meds and found out she shouldn't be taking them at the same time!
What I am still curious about is this: Let's say I have breakfast between 9 and 10 AM. Is it OK to take my synthroid one day at 7 AM and the next day at 8 AM ? In other words... if I take my synthroid every day a couple of hours before eating, but I don't take my synthroid at the same time everyday because I forget, could this cause me any trouble ?
Due to the long half-life of T4 (about 7 days), taking your Synthroid at different times shouldn't be a real issue. It IS best to take it at the same time every day, but this is as much to reinforce the habit of making sure you are tking it as it is for effectiveness.
As for the timing of it most doctors recommend taking it in the morning as you can see by the responses, but there are some who prefer to take it before bed. Taking it before bed has advantages, because if you do it right, you won't have eaten within two hours of taking your meds. Since it is not a good idea, metabolically speaking, to eat right before bed, it has a double advantage doing it this way. Plus, some people report sleeping better for some reason wehn they take it at night.
I am not a doctor, nor have I ever played one on TV...
I do not take mine at night. But when I take it real early like 5 A.M., I sleep REALLY good the next couple of hours. I had a hunch it has something to do with the synthroid. I thought about taking it at night. What do you think?
Does anyone take theirs at night? How do you feel and did you start taking it at night for that reason?
