Quick question...my new Endo wants me to go in and get an Ultra Sound on my neck next week. I had Thyroid Cancer and a total thyroidectomy 4 years ago - I have had 3 RAI treatments - the last one being 2 years ago (a very high dose).
My question is - what will this show? Will this show any recurrance of cancer - or just if there is any remaining thyroid tissue?
My hormone levels started giving me hyper symptoms at the beginning of the year (all of a sudden) and have been hyper since. My endo lowered my synthroid dosage about 3 weeks ago.
It should show the tissues... but it will also show your antibodies, and what is going on within your neck. That is also how they will discover if you have hashimoto's or graves diease.
The ultra sounds just gives them and actual picture of what is going on within you thyriod.
But I should not have any thyroid left - or that is the goal I think, with a total thyroidectomy. I had Thyroid cancer and they removed as much of my thyroid as possible - I went in for 3 RAI treatments to kill the rest - supposedly.
I have gone in for Thyroid Scans before - where I stop taking my synthroid and they scan me, but I haven't done the Ultra Sound - and I was wondering what was the difference.
Ultrasound will show if you have tissue growth. It will not tell if that tissue is normal or cancerous. For you, any tissue would definitly be undesireable. It is an easy method to rule out the obvious, but it is far from a complete picture of thyroid cancer.
