I was only in the hospital for two nights- even though I was told my surgery was a difficult one because of my shorter neck. Any longer I would have gone mad! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dance.gif It's very rare that your calcium could be affected- only if they hit the parathyroid glands. You're in my thoughts kay !

If you're having your entire thyroid removed there is a higher chance that the parathyroids will be "upset" during surgery. Know the signs of hypocalcimia (low calcium). A major one is a numbness or tingly feeling in your face. I had this, and was able to tell my nurse, she then started IV calcium, and I was able to go home in 2.5 days. The Dr. had my blood tested every 2 hours, annoying, but they were able to stop my calcium from getting too low. Good luck with your surgery.
