Question Help-thyroid & HEAVY periods???

Has anyone experienced a relation between heavy periods and thyroid disorder? I posted on womens heathboards and was told to try here.
Bad periods...BAD. Wondering if there is a correlation.
THanks

Were you diagnosed with a thyroid problem?? If not there can be a ton of reasons for heavy periods such as endometriosis, fibroids, etc. so it can be many things.

Another reason for heavy periods could be that you are starting menopause or you are in perimenopause. Keep an eye on your blood count. You may need iron supplements. The most important thing though is to discuss it with your doctor.

Hello i just wanted to tell you my story about my cycle and thyroid.

From mid last year my period was getting HEAVY. For months.
I didn't know why. And also long cycles too.
I then about last Nov my period stopped all together.
So To make the story short, I found out I have an over active Thyroid. SO I'm seeing a Thyroid Dr who told me I should go on the pill so I won't get prego while I'm doing the Iodine treatments and other treatments.
So Ever since Then my cycle came back and normal.
I Had to get used to the water rention but now I'm on the Atkins so I feel better.
MY Dr just called today and told me my levels are finally lower so I can start Meds.
I have to pick them up today.
Anyway hang in there.
Emi

There are thyroid hormone receptors on your ovaries. The ovaries are constantly monitoring your thyroid levels, and when thyroid levels are too low or too high, the ovaries change the amount of estrogen and progesterone that is produced.

This can have a profound effect on your menstrual cycle. Some people experience shorter cyles, some experience longer cycles, some have heavier bleeding, and some have less bleeding.

The effects also make it harder to get pregnant, and if you do get pregnant, you are less likely to be able to carry the baby to term. If you DO carry the baby to term, there is a greatly increased risk of birth defects and a good chance that the baby will have a high birth weight (ie greater than 8 pounds) if you carry to full term.

Emi,
Wow. Thanks for the info.
Did you experience weight loss with the overactive thyroid? My cousinhad that.
I have not been checked.
Funny that you are on Atkins...I have been on before with great results.
I am an active 35 year old with three kids. I work out 5 days a week. So this gig with the heavy . is the worst inconvenience.
The bad news is that my sister had a stroke when she was 28 and on the pill. She lost half of her vision. SO needless to say this is not a viable option for me or my sisters. That sister, incidentally, has bad .'s too.

SO, I'm off to the gyn next month to do what I can.
Tired of this.
It has been great to have it and three kids as a result! But, enough already!!!
Thanks again, Emi. Good luck with Atkins.
Have you had the Atkins Bars? Chocolate Decadence ROCKS!!!
K

Menorrhagia (or heavy periods) are associated with hypothyroidism. It is a common finding in women with the disease actually.
