Post Meep - Please Advise

Got my last thyroid profile and wondering what a bit low T-4 means and can I use higher dosage.

Mine Lab Range

T3 Uptake 37.01 24.4-39.1
T4 6.4 6.5-10.5
FTI 7.5 6.0-11.4
3rd generation TSH 1.821 .35-5.50

There are several people here (especially Meep) who are the experts, but your T4 is low ... however, based on my own experience of late, I have learned that the total T4 number doesn't really indicate much, i.e. - my total T4 is 11.4 - which is way high - but my free T4 (which is what my body is actually able to use) is low as is my free T3 - If you don't feel well, it would be helpful for you to have your free T3 and T4 levels checked to get the whole picture. Most people here will say the same.

Hope this helps!
Kael

Thanks Kael. If free T-4 is low too will a higher dosage of levothyroxine correct it?

I agree with Kael. Your Total T4 is below normal. Your FTI (Free Thyroxine Index or calculated Free T4) which isn't as accurate as a REAL T4 test, but si helpful, nonetheless, is low-normal.

Based on these scores your doc should increase your dose at least slightly to bring up the T4.

What med are you taking?

Thanks Meep. Been on 175mcg of Synthroid for years. Planning on trying Eltroxin at 200mcg - should have it in week or so. Gave up on my Doc as the only thing he will test for is TSH - says that is all that matters. So, I started going to a mobile lab which was the result I gave you. I ordered Eltroxin overseas as no prescription is needed from the USA. Will try it for a month or two and go back to mobile lab. Thanks again.

Forgot one thing Meep. I read that Alha Lipoic Acid can hinder absorption of levothyroxine. Is there any truth to that? I take 600mg a day as well as 500mg Selenium - plus numerous other supplements.

I don't know about the Alph Lipoic Acid inhibiting levothyroxine absorbtion ...never heard anything to that effect. I certainly wouldn't take them at the same time, just to be safe, though.

On the Selenium, why are you taking so much. Everything I ahve ever read about Selenium supplementation says to take no more than 200mcg. Too much of a good thing can be detrimental.

I talked with a chemist that formulates nutritional products and he said toxicity sets in at 1000 per day. However, NIH says not to exceed 400. Thanks for your help. Will let you know what Eltroxin does or does not do.
