Post I NEED HELP ~ Thyroid and diet

Hello, I started the Atkins diet a week ago. I have an over active Thyroid and did the iodine thing 2 months ago.
Does anyone know when you have Tyroid Problems if it's good to be on the Atkins? I like to do the points (Weightwatchers ) But I tried the atkins to jump start it.
I don't know if this is for me since I'm taking Beta blocker.
It says that It would be hard to lose the weight when you take some meds.
I did the points for about 2 weeks and lost 14 lbs b4.
I lost 4 lbs in 4 days with the Atkins but now I'm PMSing and with the water retention I gained water weight : (
Do you think sticking with the points is better than the atkins?
Damn thyoird!..lol

Im not sure but do what feels best to you. I know I tried a mainly protein diet not too long ago and it did not agree with me at all and I wound up getting very weak and sick. I still think a well balanced diet is probably best of all.

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism(Grave's disease) in sept. of 2002. I was placed on methimazole to control my overactive thyroid. After going from a very active state to almost hypoactive and then back again I decided to try a dietary change. I went on the Atkins diet and lost 40lbs. The interesting thing is that my energy returned and I felt like my old self. Thinking that the diet was not good for me long term I have since gone back to the "normal" carbohydrate diet that most of us are on. Recently I began to feel hyperactive again despite being on a 5mg. regimen of Methimazole. My endocrinologist just confirmed that my T-3 count is way up. It is acknowledged that fasting or starvation reduce T-3 levels in the body. If carbs. are ingested T-3 levels return quickly, however protein does not have the same effect and the levels stay low. Most people on carb. restricted diets will have low T-3 levels. In fact the body will go into a protective state and produce rT-3 (reverse t-3). I am going to go back on Atkins' diet and I believe my symptoms will in fact go away again!
I would encourage you to talk to your doctor and discuss any major diet changes. If there is no concern I think it would be beneficial to give it a try. Good luck!

Thank you for ther reply.
i talked to my Dr and he said it's ok to be on the High protein Diet so I'm glad.
I just watch my Carb intake and make sure I eat lots of Veggies.
It's had cuz I just started taking Synthroid. MY Levels finally went down so my Dr said it was time.
I feel alot more hyper now.
ANd Get mad and moody easy.
But I'm sure it's all the changes I'm going through.
But I still don't like it when i'm like this. ya know?
