Post looking for new treatment direction - hypo

Hi all!

I'm glad to have found what looks like an active and informative forum about thyroid disorders... I've been treated for hashimoto's for 5 years now...

I've just moved back to the US from Canada, and I need to find a new doctor. I was working with an endo in Canada who was not great about keeping me posted on what she was doing. I think she was basically trying to get my TSH low low low and make sure the nodules were shrinking. Now I'd like to be more proactive on my end, and work with someone who is open to exploring things like T3 supplementation/Armour/adrenal support - whatever it takes to be thorough about it. I feel much less cold and have lost significant weight in the 5 years on 0.15mg levothyroxine (eltroxin), but i do have brain fogginess and some depression and anxiety.

My most recent labs are (in Canadian units
TSH 0.02 (0.40-5.50) mU/L
Free T3 3.6 (2.8-7.1) pmol/L
Free T4 20.3 (7.5-20) pmol/L
Anti-thyroglobulin <20 (<70) IU/mL
Anti-TPO 66 (<40) IU/ml

Also, my morning basal body T's generally range from 36.2C to 36.8C...

Any suggestions on how to go about getting a good doctor for this, and whether there's anything glaring in my lab results I should be working on? I've tried wrapping my mind around it, but I'm not really sure whether I'm just seeing what I want to see. Also, I think Eltroxin is not available in the US - will I run into problems with switching meds? I was on Synthroid for a while until my pharmacy screwed up and started giving me Eltroxin, ha ha...but then I decided to stick with it instead of switching back.

Thanks!
-rosemary

There's lots of options you could try in the US. Actually, a T3 therapy like Armour or added Cytomel (tertroxin) would help you out tremendously if I used your labs as a judge - your FT3 number could come up tremendously.

I agree, your free T3 should be mid to upper range, it is rather low. Also if you are not taking selenium (100 mcg a day) you should start on that as it helps your body convert the T4 to T3.

thanks Sky_Eagle1 and Dea4,

i did pick up some selenium today, though i got the 200mcg - that's what they had at the drug store. should i take it every other day? i think from what i've read it lasts a while in the body...

we'll see what happens. if i don't notice a difference in say 2 weeks is it worth it to keep taking selenium?

probably time to see a doctor once i get settled in here. my doc in canada gave me a 200 day supply of eltroxin so that i could wait on finding a new doc, but maybe i should find someone sooner.

thanks again,

-rosemary
