I gained 28 pounds while taking Tapazole for the last 4.3 years. If my doctor had been vigilent about testing my thyroid levels and kept me from going hypo I think I would NOT have gained that much. I've since lost 18 of the weight gain and am back at my normal weight before I got sick with Graves.
My doctor made the mistake of dosing me based on my TSH test results. I've learned since then, (the hard way), that TSH results should NEVER be used to dose a patient on anti-thyroid meds as it is unreliable for someone who has been hyper. The better tests to base our dosages on are the Free T4 and Free T3 lab tests, which are our actual thyroid hormone levels.
Some days you're the dog...some days you're the hydrant! REMISSION from Graves attained 7/11/03....YAHOO!!
(dx Graves 4/99, treatment w/Tapazole and Atenolol)
