Post Surgery

I had Thyroid surgery a week ago. They removed a larger goiter, thyroid and 1 parathyroid gland. I was put on large dosages of calcium (3000 mg)because of the tingling of my hands and face. It was not an easy surgery. I am suppose to go back to work in another week, but I'm not sure my body is ready for me to go back. My neck is still swollen and I am wondering when this will get better. I still feel like I have something caught in my throat. I seem to get hungry every 2 hours, I don't know if it is because of my hormones going crazy or just from being bored.
Anyone have any words o wisdom? Like when does all this get better? Or what should I expect now?

Wink

My goiter was doing the same...it had pushed everything to the left and I was having trouble swallowing at times. They gave me Percocet but that keeps me wired and so they gave me Darvocet. They doesn't do much for me either! The biggest problem is that I can't sleep! I would have never thought the swelling would have been this intense for so many days out of surgery. They say it takes a while...but this is crazy!

Yours is the first really negative reaction I have read about since looking on this board, I am sorry to hear of your recovery since I am scheduled next Thurs for the same. Keep positive and know you should see improvment soon. Hang in there! KK

Thumbs up

I guess I did seem negative about surgery. I shouldn't be, if I had to do it again, I would. It was just a lot worse than I thought it would be. I like to bounce back very quickly and this was a little harder than I had planned. I am feeling better everyday.

Having your thyroid removed isn't the walk in the park a lot of people make it out to be. Having any kind of sugery takes a lot out of you, and you need time to rest. Have the Drs. started you on any meds? Once they do that, and you get regulated, you'll feel a lot better. I know I psyched myself up to get through the day with my kids, but as soon as they were in bed I was asleep. For about a month I went to bed at 7-8 at night. After about 5-6 weeks post-op I was back to "normal" You will be tired, and not feel like doing what needs to be done, but like KazKan said keeping positive and saying the mantra, "this too shall pass" will help you get through this rough patch. Keep us informed, and prayers for a speedy recovery. Also talk to your Dr. about your neck still being swollen, I don't think that's normal a week post-op. Aimee

Thanks Aimee...I am feeling much better everyday. Sleeping still isn't easy yet. I go back to work in a couple of days....that should be fun with my resting habits right now. The drs have me on tons of calcium, 100 mcg Synthroid which I have been on forever. I have been on lots of different dosages of synthroid or levoxyl for years now.

Ha! My favorite quote! "And this too shall pass"
