fluttery feeling in throat

Hello,
I'm not sure if I have a thyroid problem. Tests in the past show normal but I have a few symtoms and have wondered off and on over the years but the thing that has been bothering me lately is this fluttery feeling in my throat about where the thyroid glands are. Could this mean I do have some kind of thyroid problem or is there another reason I would get this?

Re: fluttery feeling in throat

Is the feeling in your throat about where the soft spot in your neck is between the collar bones? reason I ask is because I get a strange feeling there and haven't been able to figure out what is causing it. I do have a thyroid problem, but this odd feeling just started about 2 months ago, had a thyroid ultrasound done but it came back o.k.

Re: fluttery feeling in throat

I am a 27 year old male and I have the exact same feeling. it is in the soft spot right below my adams apple. I was recently diagnosed with mitral regurgitation, a defect in one of the valves in my heart. I dont know if the feeling is from that or what. I also had a thyroid test done with some blood work the dr ordered but it was normal. Do either of you have heart valve regurgitation??

Re: fluttery feeling in throat

I have hashi's and I do notice the fluttery feeling in my throat at times. Mine gets set off mostly by my diet and if I am restricting myself and if I do alot of exercise. I wish I knew exactly what it was from.

Since my last post in December, I have been to a cardiologist. I don't have Mitral Valve problems but I do have extra beats followed by a pause, the funny feeling in my throat (in the soft spot) is the pause. I found that I get this worse when my thryoid levels are off, so the extra beats are most likely caused by my thyroid. It does feel very strange. I also have the feeling stronger if I have eaten, once I burp it seems to help.

Since you say you think it may be diet, do you notice that the feeling gets better if you burp? My cardio said that since the esophogus goes right next to the heart, it can be felt in that case also. Most likely since you have Hashi's (which I have also) the feeling may be extra beats and a pause just like I have. Be sure your free thyroid levels are in the upper 1/3 of the lab range.

Is that called premature atrial contractions (PAC's)? I was diagnosed w/those during my last pregnancy, and now I feel that same weird feeling in my throat along with a stronger than normal heart beat. Sometimes I feel like my heart is racing, as well, but when I do my pulse, it's not usually "racing", just "fast" (around 90-95 bpm). Does that sound familiar?

As yet, I still have no diagnosis, but my symptoms have changed. I have all but given up hope on finding a decent dr. and a real diagnosis.

The cardio I saw just called them extra beats followed by a pause, he said I have them in the upper and lower chamber. He suspected they were mainly caused by my thyroid and I found I had too much T3, once I got that lowered and my T4 raised they went away, then returned but not quite as bad, checked my thryoid levels and then both my Frees were low. So....now the extra beats and skips appear if my levels are low or high I have them now and my levels were low again.
They had me wear a 24 hour holter and also did an Echo, he said the Echo looked really good and that the holter showed the extra beats, although when I wore it I didn't even have that feeling much, but maybe they were just not as strong as they can be and thats when they are felt, who knows.

I get that stronger feeling heartbeat sometimes but not always in conjunction with the feeling in the throat. Have you been checked for MVP? Why do you feel the dr wasn't a decent one? What tests did they do on you?

Re: fluttery feeling in throat

Hi everyone,
I didn't realize there were so many replies to my question. Awhile after I was getting this I noticed my heart seemed to beat harder every so often, just one beat or two. At first it was happening all day, every day but it subsided some and I only notice it occasionally now. I went to the doctor for my annual exam and asked him about this. He said it is PVCs (premature ventricular contractions) I haven't had the fluttery feeling anymore but I still get the funny heartbeats. I'm getting my thyroid tested soon. I'm checking for antibodies. The feeling was in that soft spot by the way.

Re: fluttery feeling in throat

sounds like globus (caused by acid reflux)- the fact that this "fluttering" sensation is by your thyroid is coincidental as there is nothing in the thyroid to "flutter"

Re: fluttery feeling in throat

Low thyroid can cause PVCs. I have them when my hormone levels are off. Let us know when you get your test results back.

Re: fluttery feeling in throat

janscrub,
I don't have acid reflux so I don't think that's it in my case.
Thanks,
Shelli

That feeling is in the soft spot of the neck between the collar bones, it is from the heart skipping, I feel it a lot, its when the heart has extra beats and pauses, its the pause or "skip" that is felt there and this can be caused by low or high thyroid levels.

Re: fluttery feeling in throat

The feeling I had personally was my heart skipping beats. For others it may be caused by other things, but mine was in fact my heart skipping causing the feeling.
