Hi, I was diagnosed as hypothyroid last year and have been on synthroid for about 20 months now. I look back now and see that i've had symptoms since late 1980's and a new doctor finally caught it last year, thankfully!! Since i began synthroid in May 2002 i can see an improvement, but i still have brain fog, muscle aches and other symptoms like poor memory, poor sleep that are not aleviated. I'm tired of feeling NOT myself. Soooo, i've been reading up about this Armour thyroid and wondering if anyone on this board knows whether it's available up here in Canada or even a similar drug that includes both T4 and T3 as I'm beginning to wonder whether my body is not properly converting the synthetic T4 to T3 in synthroid.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
cossette...
p.s. this is a really neat board. what a blessing to have this available.
I don't live in Canada, but I don't think Armour is used there. Cytomel (synthetic T3) is used sometimes in conjunction with synth T4... but not often, I gather.
Jinglebts is Canadian... hope she or another Canadian member will help you out with a definite answer.
I don't know if exactly armour is used here, personally, I take cytomel. I have noticed that almost all non-Canadian's generally use synthroid, whereas up here generally people take eltroxin (at least in my area). I am sure there is the same product here, possibly used under a different name. What part of Canada are you from?
I am from Sault Ste. Marie Ontario which is on the boarder of Michigan so maybe i can get it there if my doctor approves it. thought it would be easier to get it here if it is available. i also wish we had compounding pharmacists around here as it would appear that 30 mcg of Armour is equal to 50 mcg of synthroid and 60 mcg of A. is equal to 100 mcg of S. and.....i'm on 75 mcg which is right in the middle and as far as i know there is no 45 mcg of Armour available.
Any thoughts on this? I'm trying to get as much info as i can before i see my nurse prac.
me again....i was just looking at the information posted on the third thread on this site and it has a chart about the comparisons between levothyroxine (synthroid) and armour and i can see that my figures were off. i'm still learning about the different doses. it occurred to me that to get .075 mg (75 mcg) of synthroid (which is what i'm on right now) equivalent in Armour i could take a combination of 1/4 mg and 1/2 mg of Armour. Does that make sense?

premature ovarian failure since adolescense
on hormones for 25 years
presently on estrace, prometrium, celexa and synthroid (and a partridge in a pear tree )
God bless you all.
Armour has a conversion chart on its website. If I'm reading it right, the equivalent of .075 mcg Synthroid is 45 mg Armour. A. does make a 15 mg tablet... I know because I take a 30 and a 15 every day.

Armour is not available in Canada, but an identical product from another manufacturer is. It is called Parke-Davis Thyroid or simply "Thyroid".

Thanks Danny/Meep. That is a tremendous help. With that i wa able to find a web site with all the necessary info re 'Thyroid' by Parke-Davis which show conversion chart almost identical to Armour (when converted from Synthroid).
Have made an appointment to see my doc (nurse prac.) on Jan. 7 and will take it up with her.
In the meantime I'm adding selenium to my daily doses of vitamins and minerals (cal-mag, b-complex, vit. a, etc.).
