Saw my Cancer Specialist.... lots of testing coming up
I went this past Thursday to my cancer specialist for a followup on my neck and to have an I-31 scan done. However, they felt it was necessary to do a complete physical and wait on the scan. They found a "possible growth" in my throat after telling them I've been having trouble swallowing. Also, they found a "large mass" in my left breast. Therefore, I have to go to outpatient on Monday (2/9) for a Barium Swallow and on Thursday (2/12) for a mammagram/ultra sound. Then, I will have the I-31 scan on March 2nd. I was taken off my Synthroid meds until further notice. What changes will take place being off the thyroid med? And, has anyone ever heard of breast abnormalities associated with hypothyroidsm?
In the beginning I was so afraid, but today I have decided not to worry anymore about it. It's in God's hands as well as the Dr's. PTL!

(((((((((((pagegurl))))))))) my thoughts and prayers are with you during the upcoming week. Please let us know how things go with the testing.
How much of a dosage of Synthroid were you on before? My dr and pharmacist both told me (not sure how accurate this is) - that it can take up to three days to start getting effects of being off of your synthroid meds. Don't know if this is true with the other thyroid replacement meds or not.
Synthroid stays in your system quite awhile.
Again - HUGS to you. You are taking a very positive approach to everything - you are an amazing woman.

I was on 100 mcg of Synthroid. I had a total thyroidectomy in Jan, 2002 and this will be the 1st time that I can remember that I've had to go off my meds. Thanks so much for the HUGS.

Re: Saw my Cancer Specialist.... lots of testing coming up
Hi Deb, what a terrible thing to go through. I wish you luck with all the tests and the upcoming weeks without your meds. I am currently waiting for an RAI myself, have been off meds since Jan 21st. The first couple weeks was hell! I was SOOOO tired and sluggish and was rather moody most of the time. The last couple days have been a lot better, very much back to my old self. I am still sleeping a lot, and I caught a cold, so the first days of the were very exhaustingm, nearing impossible to move. I went on a low-iodine diet, since the 28th, and I thought I would miss my salt...I don't, but it too might have impacted me in a way to get my body back up to par. Who knows what your body wants and will react to when you have thyroid problems? It's a very interesting and unwelcomed period in my life . I encourage you to keep thinking strong like that, I went through some down times, but my optimistic self always shows up in the end. Thank goodness for that!
As for the breast abnormalities associated with hypothyroidism, there has been a few 'theories' I have read associating the two (in my mind at least). How old are you if you don't mind me asking? I don't want to misquote any of the theories (good old brain fog) but I believe I have read about the thyroid messing with estrogen and what not and that disturbing the breast tissues and causing abnormal growth. I know when I went to my very first endo when I was 14, he felt my breasts to see if they were growing normally. (Now that completetly freaked me out and I never went back to him). Doctors also have asked me in the past about lactating and if there were any noticeable breast differences as I have had period problems my entire life, caused my thyroid dysfunctions. I have also read up on something to do prolactin, I cannot remember what though... But overall, I don't think I have ever read breast lumps directly related to hyopT. There is an article floating in cyber space discussing a link between RAI and breast lump/cancer development later on in life. However, this is not your case but I would still bring it up when you see your oncologist next time. In fact, I am going on a research mission right now to find out some more info. Will bring it to your attention if I find anything!
Good luck, and you will always a friend and some ears around to listen and help you get through this.

Isn't it just amazing how much the thyroid controls in our bodies? I would have never believed it until I had my thyroid removed.
I'd love to read any info you find. Thanks so much for your encouragement.

Re: Saw my Cancer Specialist.... lots of testing coming up
Hello,
I wanted to wish you luck on all your test and let you know I am praying for you as well... I have posted my story in the story post on this page but I will copy and past it here for you.. I also went through what you are going through(well some of it ) God Bless ,Mars
Hello,
It's taken me awhile to write my story.I am a 39 year old Female. I have been coming to this wonderful board for awhile.. My story begins a couple years ago when I just felt real sick, I had acid reflex for year and gained weight and just felt bad all the time.. My Dr. really had no answers for me. Then the first of this year I felt like I was unable to live life like I have been I was so sick, and went into the Dr. My Dr. found 2 breast lumps and I was told they needed to come out,4 days after the lumps were found, I found a lump on my right side of my Thyroid. My first thought was WHY God ? I had really chaged my life around and had a Wonderful Birth daughter that was in an auto accident when she was 10 (now 24) That is TBI. We have adopted 6 of Gods angels and our life was going so well . In April I had the surgery for my breast lumps and Thank our awesome God there was no cancer, now to get back to the Thyroid a FNA was done it came back not 100% for cancer so surgery was in May 2002 and cancer was found. WOW what a huge blow, My thought was how can my husband & children live without me this isn't fair. Then I found this board ( I know God brought me here) This board is so Awesome ,I met so many wonderful people on here But one stands out the most and that is ArtfulD. She has been at my side through all of this and is my piller that God sent my way ( Thank You ArtfulD) I went through the RAI in June and was put on Synthroid I am still not on the right dose but we are getting there. I have good days and bad. I just Thank God for such a good out come, Things could of been so much worse.. God Bless you all , Marcia ( also known as stardust39)

Mars..........
Thanks so much for the prayers. I also posted my story on the board as well. Here goes:
~~~It's just amazing how many individuals suffer with Thyroid disorders. In November, 2001, I began having problems with hair loss, weight gain, low metabolism, memory loss, mental fog, confusion, extreme fatigue, tingling extremities, numb extremities, cold intolerance, extreme heat flashes, etc. I had also began developing anxiety attacks for no reason, heart palpitations, no sex drive, unexplained fatigue, depression and suicidal thoughts. Another thing that plagued me was the constant feeling of something in my throat, which in turn caused me frequent cough.
My husband insisted that I go for a physical, so I scheduled one for December, 2001. The results (along with the blood work) showed everything was normal. However, I was still suffering all the symptoms. He prescribed me meds for pre-menopause, depression, and anxiety.Because I still didn't feel right, I decided to go back to the Dr to check me for a possible cold and cough. I guess he thought I was a hypochondriac (lol). After the checkup, we sat and talked. And then he decided to check me once more, due to the fact I was constantly clearing my throat. He pressed around on my thyroid pretty hard until he found something. He immediately sent me to a specialist (that day). I was scared, but relieved.
The surgeon found many "nodules" on my thyroid, one of which was the size of a quarterthat had ruptured. No wonder I was clearing my throat. My surgery was scheduled for the following week. I had cancer, therefore, he had to remove my thyroid, along with some lymph nodes. After surgery, I had to take radioactive iodine doses.
My TSH levels have been so off the charts. For instance, last March (2003), my level was at 137.0. WHEW! Finally, this past Sept, 2003, my levels were within the range. PTL!~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mars.... that was about a month ago, I think. And now all this stuff I'm going through. I'm just going to have peace no matter what. Thanks again.
