Symptoms of hypothyroid, test at lower limit of normal - Thyroid the culprit?

I've been struggling for a while with lots of the symptoms that could be indicative of thyroid disorder. When I look at the list of symptoms, I have practically every one of them (except for weight gain). I'm constantly cold, low energy, etc etc down the list.

My doctor said my thyroid tests are normal, but when I looked at the actual printout, I wonder. There are two tests there: the "Thyroxine-free" is 0.8, which puts me right on the border (range is given as 0.8 to 1.8). The THS is 0.9.

Could I be borderline but symptomatic?

Thanks for any suggestions.

As I have learned from the very, very helpful people here and through A LOT of reading, those ranges that the labs offer are exactly that - ranges. I'm not very good at reading the particulars of the numbers, but I do know that what's normal for one person may not be normal for the next person. Looking back, I have had symptoms for the past year and a half and my numbers in April were supposedly normal, albeit high normal. The goal is to find a doctor who will listen to how you're FEELING and use your numbers as a guideline, not gospel. My first endo, compared to the endo I see now, was awful. He gave my LAB REPORT some great treatment and left me alone and scared and worried and very sick.

I'm sure others will respond to your post as well. Inept doctors seem to be one of the great unifying forces around here...

Best of luck to you!

That .08 is too low, you should be mid to upper in that range, mid range is 1.3, you should be above this number, no wonder you are experiencing symptoms. Weight gain does not happen to everyone, so you can still have a thyroid problem without gaining weight.

I think you need a new dr, also you need to have your Free T3 checked as well as the Free T4 and get tested for thyroid antibodies, chances are you have them. Antibodies will cause tons of symptoms with otherwise "normal" frees and normal TSH and this can go on for years before the TSH that most drs go by is even out of range.

Keep us posted on your progress, finding the right dr is sometimes hard but worth the search.

Good luck

Thanks very much to both of you for the response. Sounds like I need to pay my doctor another visit and demand (wish me luck!) that he refers to me to a specialist. I don't think he really knows what he's doing.

These boards are great. Best to you, too, and I'll visit here again.

Meg
