After I eat ice cream especially (but also sometimes with hot food or drink), I get a feeling like I have to cough. Sometimes I almost feel like I'm choking. It feels like there's something stuck in my throat around the thyroid area. I have a diagnosis of "possible" asthma. I thought it was because of asthma but after hearing so many people talk about a lump in their throat, I think maybe it can be thyroid related? Does anyone else experience this kind of thing? Thanks.
I'm not totally sure what to think. I have been having the lump in the throat thing, and worse than usual asthma, difficulty and painful swallowing, all at the base of my neck in the thyroid area. Itchiness too. Pollen counts are high. I'm wondering if the "normal" allergens haven't gotten everyone's immune systems into overdrive, making the symptoms of autoimmune thyroid disease worse. I know that allergies compound, I don't know why thyroid allergies would be any different. In answer to your question, you sound an awful lot like me. My allergic reactions always seize me by the throat. It starts to tingle, swell, I feel like I'm almost choking. I start coughing and can't stop. My rescue inhaler takes care of it. I haven't determined if this is asthma or an allergic reaction or both. I know that inhaling microwave popcorn fumes sets me off every time.
You know Barb in all seriousness for the moment....asthma could also be triggered by extreem cold or hot..... think about it..... swallowing ice cream causes constriction..... shuddering little esophegus poor wee thing..... and it could go into rebellion.
if the throat constricts (in my mind) any swelling from a wonky thyroid may make it even more tight for ICE cream (you lucky duck) to slide down..... I have some jello pudding (orange and white stuff) yum I will have that....take my mind off of NOT having ice cream....dunno if my thighs will thank me but maybe they wont thunder as much.
I have Advair to take twice a day and I have Albuterol for my rescue inhaler. I feel kind of silly because I didn't even make the hot/cold connection. My dh noticed it. I also think I have an allergy tosome kind of flower or plant but I don't know what it is yet. Every time I go to the garden shop at Home Depot, my eyes start tearing and my sinuses go into overdrive. By the time I leave there, I look like I've been crying. The asthma and allergies have all happened since I was dx'd hypo.
Bonnie, I think I'll try pudding or Jello instead of ice cream.
Gotta go now.
