Question Enlarged thyroid and "Normal" blood results????

My questions is can you have an enlarged thyroid and normal blood test results. My blood work supposively came back "normal" according to my Doc. but I have had an enlarged thyroid for about 3 months now and he finally agreed to send me for a thyroid scan. I am pretty sure that I am dealing this Hashimoto but my doctor will not send me to a endo cause he does not feel there is enough proof yet. So I am hoping that my scan will show some proof. Another question does anyone deal with a naturalist for their thyroid symptoms? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Lisa K.

Re: Enlarged thyroid and "Normal" blood results????

I have been monitored for several years, but always had my levels come back within range, and have now been diagnosed with both thyrioditis and multinodular goiter, my thyroid is compressing my esophagus and I have great difficulty swallowing. I have been on thyroxine for 4 months now to try to supress and shrink some of it and to see about tolerating the tablets ( I tried this once before but had horrible side effects from the comination of ther meds I was taking) and be prepared better for surgery ( hopefully mid-August or September). I think it is possible to have labs within normal range but also to consider treating the symptoms/whole patient. Since I was exhibiting symptoms/signs of hypo- weight gain, hair thinning/breakage, fatigue etc. starting replacement I sleep less, have healthy hair and feel so much better. Good Luck!

Re: Enlarged thyroid and "Normal" blood results????

What a dr thinks is normal is not always whats normal for YOU.
On average, a GP has about 1 hour of training on thyroid disorders, so they generally think that if your test results are falling within the "normal" range, then you are o.k. BUT.....the range is ONLY a gauge and where in the range your results fall makes a whole lot of difference.
Did they test you for antibodies? I'll look up your previous posts to see if you posted test results before, if not post them here with the ranges.

Re: Enlarged thyroid and "Normal" blood results????

The other day, a doctor was reading my blood work results to me, said calcium was 10. something. He had to take a phone call so I looked at the paper he'd said I could have a copy of, and I first told you he looked at the wrong line, but am editing to say I was the one who looked at the wrong line. He was right. But some say their doctors aren't very careful.

Is Calcium 10 good?

Re: Enlarged thyroid and "Normal" blood results????

I had the same thing 2 years ago. I year ago I had a multi-nodulae cyst removed after being bip'd 3 times. All was fine in the end. My blood tests always came back normal and I never had any symptoms of thyroid trouble..just this nodule. I would definatly go to an endo, If for nothing else, your own peace of mind. The sepcialist is the way to go!!

Re: Enlarged thyroid and "Normal" blood results????

In Nov 2001, my gyno said my thyroid felt enlarged and ran blood tests. All fell into the normal range and it wasn't discussed further...next appt, not even a mention of abnormal or enlarged thyroid. This past May, she felt my neck and said, "how long have you had this node?" I said, "what node?" to which she replied, "you have a mass, you must get this checked." I am not telling you this to scare you, but if I had pursued an endocrinologist at the first time she felt something wasn't right, perhaps my papillary cancer diagnosis would have been years sooner. I had a total thyroid ectomy/mod neck dissection in Aug and I am getting ready for RAI now. Just don't let it go...get an answer. Good luck....

Re: Enlarged thyroid and "Normal" blood results????

I too have had an enlarged thyroid for about 5 years and my bloodwork was always normal. Now I have gotten copies and it really was normal, but still this enlarged thyroid. When I went in for my physical this year my dr felt it had gotten even bigger on the left side so she sent me for an ultrasound and then ended up having a biopsy. The biopsy showed hasimoto's disease. Also, although my bloodwork is still all within range, my antibodies are way off. See she never tested those in the past. Anyway from spending HOURS reading posts from these wonderful people, and studying hashi's, it sounds like that is pretty much the norm. It can take several years for your thyroid to actually start to fail, but since it is being attacked it is growing larger and larger in order to fight. Get to another dr and insist on a biopsy and antibodies test, it will be well worth the peace of mind.

Karen
